Zack Snyder recently made an honest confession about the “gayest movie ever made” while talking about his latest release. The acclaimed filmmaker recently returned to directing with The Last Photograph.
Unfortunately, The Last Photograph has been getting mostly negative reactions since its worldwide premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, the chief among them being called a homophobe and transphobic. He related the reaction to his previous experience at the Berlin Film Festival with his 2006 film, 300. Among the many hateful comments that Snyder received back then, he was also called “homophobic”.
Speaking to Variety, Snyder cleared the misconception and stated that he’s “pro-gay” and has already made the gayest movie ever, referring to the 2006 film.
He recalled the press conference for his previous film, where he was asked various questions. “The hallmark question was when one of the guys said, ‘Are you pro-gay or pro-NRA? Which are you?’ And I said, ‘Look, I’ll be honest: I’m a tiny bit of both.’ But obviously I’m pro-gay. I made the gayest movie ever made.”
Snyder added, “300 is one of the gayest movies ever made. I always go, ‘Look, there are few movies where people come in straight and come out gay,’ and 300 is one of them.”
What is Zack Snyder’s 300 movie about?
Zack Snyder’s 300 is set in 480 B.C. where a state of war exists between Persia, led by King Xerxes, played by Rodrigo Santoro, and Greece.
At the Battle of Thermopylae, Leonidas, played by Gerard Butler, king of the Greek city-state of Sparta, leads his highly outnumbered warriors against a large Persian army.
An official description for the movie reads, “Though certain death awaits the Spartans, their sacrifice inspires all of Greece to unite against their common enemy.”
When it was released in theaters in 2007, 300 managed to receive a lukewarm reaction from critics. But its success was mostly driven by fans. It becomes evident from its exceptional Popcornmeter (Audience score) score of 89% compared to the Tomatometer score of 61% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The R-rated film eventually became a blockbuster at the box office. It earned more than $450 million worldwide against a $60 million budget.
Seeing 300’s wild success, Warner Bros. released a sequel, Rise of An Empire, in 2014, but without the original cast. However, it only made $330 million against a $110 million budget, compared to the first part.
