A shocking rumor regarding DC Studios’ upcoming Wonder Woman movie has surfaced following the disappointing box office performance of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
According to a latest scoop from insider account Knight Gambit on X, the Wonder Woman DCU movie is “on the backburner” after Supergirl’s nightmarish theatrical run.
While the film hasn’t been canceled, it’s not in pre-production at the moment. The movie was confirmed last year by James Gunn during an interview with Entertainment Weekly, “We’re working on Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman’s being written right now.”
Small Tidbit…. #WonderWoman movie is on the backburner atm (not cancelled) due to the recent #Supergirl performance So no….it’s not in pre-production… pic.twitter.com/nupcY8oOjp— Caleb Williams (@KnightGambit) September 8, 2026
DC fans should treat unverified rumors with caution until DC Studios or James Gunn issues an official statement.
How Supergirl’s box office performance could affect DC’s Wonder Woman plans
The reported shift comes on the heels of Supergirl’s box office struggles. Starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, the film arrived in June 2026 and failed to make any impact.
Made on a reported budget of $170 million, Supergirl collected only $125.9 million globally. It made just $72.1 million domestically and $53.8 million in overseas markets. Supergirl became the lowest-grossing live-action DC movie since 2010’s Jonah Hex.
Its opening was a disaster in itself for DC Studios. The film made just $37.1 million during its first weekend and never recovered from that position in subsequent weeks.
As a result, Wonder Woman is now facing an unexpected shift at DC Studios. In case the latest rumor turns out true, it simply means the team might be reassessing its female-led superhero movie plans.
While it’s not been confirmed yet, Onslaught’s Adria Arjona is expected to portray the Amazon princess Diana in the DCU. She will have an appearance in next year’s Man of Tomorrow.
While fan theories heavily link her to Wonder Woman, neither Arjona nor DC Studios has officially confirmed the role details.
