The search for the next James Bond is underway at Amazon MGM Studios. Denis Villeneuve is directing the upcoming film, which will feature the new 007 following Daniel Craig’s final appearance as Bond. Several actors have been linked to the role, but no new 007 has been officially confirmed.
A new report suggests that some of the contender lists circulating online are inaccurate. Industry insider Matthew Belloni claimed on the platform Puck News that test deals are reportedly being sent to actors under consideration, while formal auditions are still weeks away. The actual screen tests are expected later this fall, making it unlikely that anyone can accurately claim to know who has already won the role.
Why current James Bond contender reports may be misleading
The Bond casting has been highly secretive. Amazon MGM has not revealed which actors are officially being considered, leading to many reports and rumors about potential candidates. Names such as Callum Turner, Jacob Elordi, Paul Mescal, and Harris Dickinson have been linked to the role, but that does not mean they have secured the role or even reached the final audition stage.
According to Belloni, the lists of Bond contenders currently circulating online are “bogus.” He reports that Amazon MGM is sending out test deals to actors being considered for the role. The studio is expected to have a clearer idea of who will formally audition for Villeneuve within the next few weeks.
That does not mean the studio has already narrowed the search to a final choice. The actual tests are not expected until later this fall, leaving plenty of time for the list of candidates to change. An actor receiving a test deal also should not be confused with an actor being cast as Bond. Belloni noted, “so anyone who says they know who Bond is now… doesn’t.”
The secrecy surrounding the process makes unverified reports even easier to misinterpret. The studio has not revealed which actors are in the running. As Villeneuve and writer Steven Knight continue working on the next installment, additional names could enter the race.
Until the studio officially announces Craig’s replacement, reports about the next James Bond should be treated as rumors.
