Avengers: Doomsday could have a shocking twist in store for Steve Rogers. A new rumor claims that Chris Evans’ character will become “Captain HYDRA,” a brainwashed servant of Doctor Doom. The alleged leak was shared by @bluemintues on X and claims that Doom could use Rogers after gaining control of the multiverse. If true, the details could make the earlier theory about evil Steve Rogers more believable.
The Captain HYDRA claim gains more attention after the trailer for Avengers: Doomsday showed Evans returning as Rogers. Steve is seen wielding Mjolnir, but his appearance has led some fans to wonder if something is different about him. Marvel has also deliberately referred to his return as “Steve Rogers” rather than simply “Captain America.”
That difference has fueled speculation that Rogers could have a different role in the story. The new rumor now claims that Doom will turn him into “Captain HYDRA” after resurrecting him. This would also be similar to Marvel Comics’ Secret Empire storyline, where Steve Rogers became a HYDRA loyalist.
Why is Chris Evans returning to the MCU
Chris Evans’ return as Steve Rogers is surprising because Avengers: Endgame seemingly wrapped up his story. Steve traveled back in time, lived with Peggy Carter, and eventually returned as an elderly man before giving his shield to Sam Wilson.
At Fan Expo Boston, Evans explained the reason behind his return and said, “I care about the arc of all these characters, and we wouldn’t be doing it unless there was going to be a really interesting situation to put him in.” He also added that he feels “very at home with the role” and remains connected to the character.
Evans has also described his new storyline as “brutal,” saying the Russo brothers enjoy putting Steve through difficult situations. He added, “Their favourite thing to do is to just beat the crap out of him. To them, that’s what makes a hero, and that’s someone who gets punched so many times but still gets up.”
If the Captain HYDRA rumor is accurate, that could explain why Evans considered the new story worth revisiting. For now, the rumors remain unconfirmed. Marvel Studios has not revealed whether Evans is playing an evil version of Steve Rogers in Avengers: Doomsday.
