VisionQuest showrunner just gave a major update about Ultron after the ending of Avengers: Age of Ultron. In VisionQuest, one of the core relationships is between Vision (played by Paul Bettany) and his old foe, Ultron (played by James Spader), who returns to the series despite having seemingly been killed by Vision in the second installment in the Avengers film series.
For a quick recap, at the end of Avengers 2, Vision confronts the last of Ultron’s drones, questioning it about whether it is afraid of death. He says, “You’re the last one.” The scene then proceeded to show Vision using the Mind Stone to destroy Ultron. However, VisionQuest showrunner Terry Matalas‘ latest comments reveal that this was not “the last” Ultron.
Talking to Empire Magazine (per The Direct), Matalas said about Vision and Ultron, “He actually backed [Ultron] up in that movie. He always felt that he didn’t really want to kill Ultron. Ultron was such a threat to humanity, and he was so lost, but at the last moment, we’ll find out that Vision showed mercy.”
Apparently, according to Matalas, Vision moved the AI program to his internal hardware, where he has been kept captive in the android’s mindspace for years.
What is the Disney+ VisionQuest show with Ultron about?
According to the official Marvel site, in the eight-episode miniseries VisionQuest, the android Vision lives in hiding after being resurrected in WandaVision (2021). During this time, he tries to understand who he is by communicating with various AI personas that are embedded in his programming. However, when a bounty is placed on Vision’s head, he goes on the run with a mysterious teenager who may be his reincarnated son.
In VisionQuest, Ultron will be one of several AI beings living within Vision’s mind. They will appear in human form to Vision, helping him feel and understand his experiences.
James Spader further told Empire Magazine that his character is “in a very different place. He was a bit of a teenager in Age of Ultron, and I think he’s a lot older and wiser now. That makes his sense of humour even a little bit more acute. He has an insatiable thirst for knowledge and study of behaviour, so that’s only going to make him more irreverent about it all.”
VisionQuest is set to premiere on Disney+ on October 14, 2026.
