Fans have already started pointing towards reasons why VisionQuest has taken to depicting so many artificial beings as human. There are speculations that the show simply did not have the budget to keep Ultron in his robot form or have Vision fly around.
Showrunner Terry Matalas revealed that it had a lot less to do with the budget, and a lot more to do with the actors. If a production is to hire James Spader for a role, what is the point of burying him under 100 kilograms of digital vibranium?
To put fans at ease, Matalas also revealed that viewers can expect tons of ‘robot action’ in the show, and given that it’s dealing with Ultron and Vision, who last clashed in the climactic scene of Age of Ultron, fans might be in for a rematch. He said, “You’ll get plenty of robot action in the show. The show is very much inspired by that last scene in Age of Ultron between the two of them.”
What do we know about James Spader’s role as Ultron in VisionQuest?
Ultron has always been a menacing presence in the Marvel Universe, devoid of humor. In these iterations, the character is often made by Hank Pym, who is known to have anger issues and little wit. However, the MCU version was crafted by Tony Stark and Bruce Banner, so it stands to reason that it would have a lot more personality. James Spader was hence cast as Ultron in the film.
Spader reprising his role in VisionQuest has fans excited. According to the trailer, it seems that Ultron is taking his role as Vision’s creator seriously, even joking that Vision should probably call him father. As far as marketing material is concerned, it seems that Ultron is going to play a largely comedic yet emotionally resonant role as Vision’s creator, but it would not be beyond the character to turn evil.
It must be noted that Vision has stated time and time again that his personality is a fusion of multiple people: A little bit of J.A.R.V.I.S, a little bit of Bruce Banner, a little bit of Tony Stark, and a little bit of Ultron. All this was tied together by the Mind Stone, which gave the character his own distinct personality. Given that the Infinity Stone no longer exists, could it mean that White Vision’s mind is fractured? Only the show will tell.
