James Cameron’s upcoming and highly anticipated film Avatar: Fire and Ash is set to take center stage later this year. The film is reported (via AMC Theaters) to be the longest film in the franchise.
The third installment in Cameron’s epic saga will take audiences back to Pandora for a new chapter, and major theater chains, including IMAX, Cineplex, and AMC, have listed its runtime at 195 minutes (3 hours and 15 minutes).
Starring Sam Worthington, Zoë Saldaña, and others, the film is set to release on December 19, 2025, continuing the heartfelt and meticulously crafted storyline. Amidst this, the wind is flowing towards the direction of its sequels, which are not confirmed.

James Cameron has revealed that Avatar 4 isn’t guaranteed, despite having a quarter of it already filmed. He spoke about the franchise’s massive financial demands while talking to The Town with Matthew Belloni podcast, saying,
That’s up to him, it’s his money… I can answer the question in the following way: it is one metric f**k ton of money, which means we have to make two metric f**k tons of money to make a profit.
While Cameron is confident Fire and Ash will make money, he admitted the real question is whether it will make enough to justify another sequel.
His comments follow last year’s update that about a quarter of Avatar 4 is already shot. He praised the thousands of computer artists, actors, and others whose work brings Pandora to life.

James Cameron has revealed that the Avatar franchise may conclude with its third installment. But it totally depends on how well the upcoming film performs. He said to Radio Times,
If it all ends with this film that’s OK. Because it’s not a cliffhanger ending. It all resolves in a very satisfying way.
Cameron pointed out the extraordinary financial scale of the series, noting that the original Avatar made about $2.9 billion and Avatar: The Way of Water earned roughly $2.3 billion.
He even said the upcoming flick would need to deliver similarly high returns, reinforcing that profitability remains the deciding factor in the franchise’s future. But it feels like everything will go structured since the characters that the visionary has introduced seem nothing short of amazing. Thus speaking about the fourth and fifth movies, he said,
I would love to make those movies, But I’m a bit more pessimistic than I normally would have been. Cinema has become a few selected films that people believe will be an experience that’s worth leaving their homes for. Post-Covid and post-streaming, it’s a depressed industry right now. And it doesn’t seem to be bouncing back.
Reflecting on the project’s long history, Cameron said he first wrote the idea back in 1995 and has spent decades shaping the world of Pandora. He admitted that a strong box-office performance may not be enough to meet the threshold required for additional sequels.
