Zootopia 2 was destined to hit big numbers, as sequels to Disney’s 3D animated hits have always banked huge at the box office. However, it appears the new Disney sequel will break new ground with its projected opening weekend gross, with a report by Discussing Films estimating a whopping $520 million-plus gross from its five-day opening.

To put this number into perspective, one of Disney’s flagship releases of the year, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, grossed $521 million from its entire theatrical run (via Box Office Mojo).
If true, this would make its weekend gross the highest-ever for an animated movie, and considering certain box office trackers were already predicting a $500 million opening before the movie premiered, the numbers don’t seem implausible.
Zootopia 2 Signals a Strong End For Disney’s Otherwise Uneven 2025
Even if it doesn’t meet the current estimated figure, the movie is still on track to register the biggest box office opening of the year. Moreover, unlike other Disney sequels, including Frozen 2, Moana 2, and Ralph Breaks the Internet, the Zootopia sequel is actually well-received, and the good word of mouth will certainly boost its numbers, especially in the upcoming weekends.
With a $1 billion-plus box-office haul all but guaranteed at this point, the movie signals a strong finish for Disney’s 2025, which can be best described as a mixed bag.
From Snow White failing to make a splash at the box office to First Steps barely breaking even, coupled with the underwhelming performances of other Marvel outings and Pixar’s Elio, 2025 wasn’t exactly smooth for the media giant.
But with Zootopia 2 eying to deliver one of the biggest openings of all time, and Avatar: Fire & Ash slated to hit next month, it’s almost certain that Disney will be ending the year on a high note.
