Zootopia 2 budget how much does the disney sequel need to break even at box office
Spread the love

Being one of the most awaited sequels of all time over at Disney, Zootopia 2 is in it to win it. Although the reports do not mention an exact number, Movieweb suggests that the budget of Zootopia 2 could fall anywhere between $180 – $220 million.

Most of the reports cite the number $200 million as a concrete amount. For a movie to break even, it needs to earn 2 to 2.5 times its budget. Therefore, if Zootopia 2 needs to break even, it will have to earn at least anywhere between $400 – $500 million.

Of course, that will not be a problem for the Disney-led movie since Zootopia 2 is expected to reach the billion-dollar mark when it releases in theaters.

Zootopia 2 Expected to Reach the Billion-Dollar Mark in Theaters

Well, 2025 has been a good year for movies like Weapons, Sinners, Lilo & Stitch, A Minecraft Movie, and more. Although there have been equally disastrous failures side-by-side, it seems that Zootopia 2 is not going to be one of them.

With the film having been released during Thanksgiving, the drive to theaters is high. Add in the fact that the last family-friendly animated movie, titled The Bad Guys 2, was released in August of 2025, and you have a pent-up demand.

The first film, released in 2016, was already quite successful in earning a billion dollars at the global box office. Naturally, with the sequel being highly anticipated and having star-studded cameos, Zootopia 2 is expected to cross the billion-dollar mark upon release (via Variety).

Why China Will Have a Strong Contribution to Zootopia 2’s Success

Back in 2016, when Zootopia was released, Disney CEO Bob Iger visited Shanghai for its premiere. The film’s themes of social harmony and acceptance were highly praised by the Chinese audience, and it went on to earn $236 million alone from China (via Box Office Mojo)!

In 2023, the “City of Zootopia” opened at Shanghai Disneyland, and remains the world’s first and only Zootopia-themed land. Naturally, China seems quite a big fan of the Zootopia franchise.

With the sequel tackling the issue of reptiles and Gary entering Zootopia even though it is illegal, the themes of social harmony and societal justice are clearly visible, like the first film.

Naturally, the reports dictate that China will have a major contribution in helping Zootopia 2 reach the billion-dollar mark at its global box office collection.
