X-Men ’97 Season 2 wrapped on August 12, 2026, with Survival of the Fittest, an ending that killed off a fan favourite, sealed Apocalypse inside a gem, and put an anti-mutant commander-in-chief for the U.S. Season 3 is already locked in, and Marvel is moving faster than it has before.
The animation team has finished work on it, and Season 4 scripts are already underway, signalling that the studio has committed to a yearly schedule. Here’s everything we know so far about where the mutants go next.

There’s no exact date yet, but the year is confirmed. Speaking to Collider at a Season 2 finale screening, Marvel Studios’ Brad Winderbaum said Season 3 arrives next year and Season 4 the year after, which puts them in 2027 and 2028.
That’s a big shift from the two-year wait between Seasons 1 and 2. Producer Larry Houston told The Direct that the production problems behind that delay were a one-off and won’t repeat. Marvel confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con that Season 3 is already finished and ready to premiere, so expect an announcement well before it drops.
Who Will Return for X-Men ’97 Season 3?

The core voice cast is expected back, including Ross Marquand as Professor X, Ray Chase as Cyclops, Jennifer Hale as Jean Grey, Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm, Cal Dodd as Wolverine, Lenore Zann as Rogue, and George Buza as Beast.
Marvel has confirmed one major addition. Mystique will play a key role, which tracks with the finale, where she murdered Val Cooper and took her place inside X-Factor. The Brotherhood of Mutants is also joining the fight, with Blob, Pyro, Avalanche, Toad, and Surge all confirmed.
Will Matthew Waterson return after Magneto’s death in Season 2? Nightcrawler also died taking Rogue’s place in the Celestial bargain in the finale. However, this show has never treated death as permanent.
What Will Be X-Men ’97 Season 3 Plot About?

Marvel hasn’t released a synopsis, but the setup is hard to miss. Graydon Creed, the human son of Mystique and Sabretooth and founder of the anti-mutant Friends of Humanity, won the presidential election in the finale. Season 2 also brought back the Purifiers, the religious extremists led by William Stryker who want mutants wiped out entirely.
Footage shown at Comic-Con pushes this further (via ComicBook). It featured the Brotherhood fighting Sentinels painted in American stars and stripes, which strongly suggests Creed will launch a government-backed Sentinel program. That would make Season 3 the show’s darkest chapter yet, with mutants hunted by their own government rather than by a rogue scientist.
Mystique’s position is the wildcard. In the comics, Creed’s presidential run ended with his assassination, and Marvel eventually pinned it on his own mother. With Mystique now impersonating a senior X-Factor official and absent from the Brotherhood footage, the show looks set to put her against her son.
Is There a Fourth Season In the Works?

Yes. X-Men ’97 has already been renewed for Season 4, and work is well underway. According to Brad Winderbaum, scripts are written, and the animation team has moved on to storyboards, which is how Marvel plans to keep the yearly rhythm going.
Beyond that, nothing is decided. Winderbaum told Collider he simply wants to make as many seasons as fast as possible. He was also cautious about longer seasons, noting that streaming forces a choice between more episodes and a quicker release, and he’d rather get them out sooner.
