Disney has unveiled the first trailer for Wonder Man, arguably the most surprising Phase Six entry. The series stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams, an actor auditioning for a superhero IP within the MCU while secretly hiding his own powers after Hollywood shut its doors to superheroes.

Although this does make for an intriguing premise, and it’ll be interesting to see how the show executes it, there may be something bigger at play here. Given that the next chapter of the MCU will introduce the cinematic giant’s very own mutants, it won’t be far-fetched to assume that Marvel might be quietly sowing the seeds for potential anti-mutant sentiment in the future.
Is Wonder Man Quietly Alluding to the MCU’s Mutant Era?
Throughout their history, mutants have served as a powerful allegory for marginalized communities, reflecting how prejudice and fear stem from perceived differences. While Fox’s X-Men figures are set to remain in play until Secret Wars concludes, Marvel must acknowledge the core aspect of these characters once they’re properly introduced in the next phase.
And if the marketing for Wonder Man is of any indication, it seems Marvel might be way ahead on it. Even though it’s pretty apparent that the anti-hero sentiment will play a crucial role within the show, hopefully, this will eventually come into play once the MCU’s very own iteration of mutants is introduced.
As for Wonder Man, it’ll be interesting to see how his character will be approached in the foreseeable future, especially with the ending of the multiversal saga inching toward its conclusion. Whether he’ll make the jump to the next chapter of the MCU remains to be seen.
X-Men Might Dominate the MCU Post-Secret Wars
It has been years since Marvel acquired the rights to X-Men. But as it goes, the MCU is still banking on Fox’s legacy figures, and it’s growing a bit tiring. Although the upcoming Avengers duology will see these characters return, the MCU is reportedly inching toward a soft reboot beyond that.

Moreover, Marvel has previously tapped Jake Schreier, notable for helming Thunderbolts*, to direct Marvel’s first X-Men movie. Although the release window for the movie remains unclear, this iteration of the IP will reportedly comprise younger actors.
With potential recastings for other major characters, including Iron Man and Captain America, on the cards, it makes sense for the MCU to incorporate a younger cast for its biggest properties to ensure longevity. Considering the cinematic giant has struggled to get several new IPs moving in the multiversal saga, eventually prompting them to turn back to its roots, banking on the X-Men IP for the next generation of CBM stories seems like a logical bet.
