2025 was a stellar year for cinema, and even more so for action movies, whether big-budget blockbusters or original entries. From Dan Trachtenberg successfully redeeming the Predator IP on the big screen to James Gunn delivering the best CBM of the year, or anime titles like Infinity Castle becoming box office juggernauts, 2025 was a gift that kept on giving.
Although debates around the year’s top picks inevitably boil down to subjectivity, as tastes differ from person to person, this piece focuses on the standout highlights of the year. Ranging from pure popcorn entertainment to movies that were nearly impeccable on all fronts, here’s the ranking of the best action movies of 2025.
14. A Working Man
Coming off the success of 2024’s The Beekeeper, director David Ayer and Jason Statham reunite for A Working Man, another reliable Statham-led action that delivers exactly what fans would expect. Statham takes the role of Levon Cade, a construction worker who has a history in special forces, who is forced to confront his violent past after his boss’s daughter is kidnapped.
While it’s perfectly watchable, and Statham once again excels in this archetype, it noticeably falls short of Ayer and Statham’s previous collaboration, primarily because of the bloated runtime. Is it forgettable to an extent? Yes, but is it enjoyable? Also, yes, if his movies are your cup of tea.

13. Den of Thieves: Pantera
Den of Thieves: Pantera continues the cat-and-mouse game between Gerard Butler’s disgraced detective Big Nick O’Brien and O’Shea Jackson Jr.’s master thief Donnie Wilson in a flashier, more colorful sequel to the 2018 original. With his career in ruins after the first film’s chaos, Nick heads to Europe to infiltrate Donnie’s high-stakes plan, which sees him joining forces with the Panther mafia to carry out a massive diamond heist.
Although it’s an improvement over the original on some fronts, especially in terms of Butler and Jackson’s on-screen chemistry, it loses much of the gritty edge of the first movie. Moreover, given its 145-minute runtime, it can be a bit slow to get to the more enjoyable parts.

12. Fight or Flight
If you loved Bullet Train, Fight or Flight will be right up your alley. This Josh Hartnett-led action-comedy from first-time director James Madigan follows disgraced mercenary Lucas Reyes, who’s tasked with tracking a mysterious target, referred to as The Ghost, on a flight from Bangkok to San Francisco, only to discover that the plane is packed with assassins.
Although the story is a bit undercooked and the twists at the end feel abrupt, the movie makes up for its flaws through its inventive, over-the-top, and cartoonishly gore-heavy action. The movie doesn’t shy away from embracing its ridiculousness and doesn’t take itself too seriously.

11. The Running Man
Coming from Edgar Wright, the auteur’s adaptation of the Stephen King novel lacks his usual spark, as the Hot Fuzz director plays the story much more straightforwardly than his previous works. Starring Glen Powell in the lead, the movie sees him competing in a deadly reality show where he has to evade professional killers for 30 days to win a massive prize and afford life-saving treatment for his daughter.
When viewed as a standard action thriller, it’s not bad and can be pretty enjoyable, but in comparison to Wright’s esteemed filmography, it’s undoubtedly his most restrained work to date, lacking the auteur’s usual flair.

10. Ballerina
The long-awaited Ana de Armas-led John Wick spin-off lived up to the franchise’s reputation, as far as immaculately choreographed action sequences go. The central plot, however, which sees Armas’ Eve Macarro seeking revenge for her father’s death, lacks originality and depth, with the first half being heavy on exposition and slow burn. But it does excel once things get moving in a far more entertaining second half.
Overall, it’s a good extension of one of the most beloved action IPs of the last decade. Even though Ballerina relies on its parent IP for world-building and fan service as opposed to standing on its own, it’s still an enthralling watch.

9. Warfare
A24’s gritty war movie deliberately lacks the traditional trope that has become synonymous with the genre, whether it’s heroic speeches, clear arcs or backstories. Co-directed by Alex Garland and Iraq War veteran Ray Mendoza, Warfare delivers an accurate recreation of urban warfare during a 2006 Navy SEAL mission in Ramadi with an incredible sound design.
Although a technical feat, in some ways, its biggest strength works against Warfare, as the lack of plot or broader context could leave it feeling substanceless to some. Unlike other movies in the list, it isn’t exactly entertaining in the conventional sense, but for fans aching for an authentic depiction of the horrors of urban warfare, Warfare is the perfect pick.

8. Novocaine
Jack Quaid’s Novocaine turns a simple premise into chaotic and hilarious mayhem. The movie follows Quaid’s Nathan Caine, an ordinary guy with congenital insensitivity to pain, who uses this condition to barrel through increasingly unhinged violence to rescue his kidnapped girlfriend.
The movie does a sharp job of exploring vulnerability through invincibility, and the action sequences are genuinely refreshing. It might not be prestige fair, and some of the supporting figures are fairly one-note, but the movie never drags, delivering 110 minutes of pure adrenaline fun.

7. Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning serves as the final chapter in Ethan Hunt’s chapter, and all things considered, it was a worthy conclusion to the saga. The story picks up right after the ending of Dead Reckoning, continuing Hunt’s quest to stop The Entity, and features the franchise’s signature death-defying stunts, whether in the biplane or submarine sequences.
That said, it’s not perfect, far from it, and it stands as one of the weaker entries from Christopher McQuarrie and Cruise’s partnership. The franchise’s longstanding issue with exposition plagues the finale even more, and the bloated runtime and heavy reliance on nostalgia only exacerbate its flaws.

6. Predator: Killer of Killers
2025 has been an impressive year for the Predator saga, with Killer of Killers serving as a fascinating animated expansion of the franchise across different historical eras. Like Prey, Dan Trachtenberg brings another fresh take on the IP with this anthology movie that follows several interconnected events.
These include a fierce Viking shieldmaiden’s revenge, a ninja’s clash with his samurai brother, and a WWII pilot facing an alien threat.
Killer of Killers expands the Predator lore in exciting ways, and the beautiful animation, which seems akin to Arcane, only adds to its brilliance, marking another win for the series under Trachtenberg.

5. Sisu 2
Sisu 2 cranks up everything from the 2022 original to absurd and physics-defying heights, contributing to a non-stop mayhem. Jorma Tommila’s Aatami Korpi once again faces overwhelming odds, this time against the Red Army in a cross-country rampage, which feels reminiscent of Mad Max: Fury Road.
The movie is over the top and embraces the absurdity of its cartoonish carnage, and these Looney Tunes-esque sequences just add to the charm. While the plot is fairly simple with little depth, unapologetic commitment to its ridiculousness makes for one of the purest action-fueled outings of the year.

4. Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle
2025 witnessed anime movies reaching new heights, starting with Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, the first part of the trilogy finale to the saga. The movie plunges Tanjiro, Nezuko, and Hashira straight into Muzan Kibutsuji’s Infinity Castle for an all-out demonic war. The breathtaking animation, coupled with the immense scale, serves as a treat for longtime fans.
That said, there’s a big caveat: this is very much made for viewers who are well-versed in the series, and newcomers will have a rough time jumping straight into it. The movie expects viewers to do their homework, and if you do commit to it, the end experience won’t disappoint.

3. Superman
James Gunn’s reimagining of Superman had massive expectations riding on it as the launch of the new DCU, and on that note, Gunn didn’t disappoint. The movie inspires genuine hope in viewers, which is exactly what one would expect from the character, and delivers incredible action sequences that truly capture Superman’s power, while also putting his compassion at the forefront.
Was it better than Man of Steel? That fairly comes down to taste due to how different each of these interpretations is. But one thing is certain, Superman was undoubtedly the best CBM of 2025, and one of the year’s strongest action outings, which has everyone enticed for the next chapter.

2. Chainsaw Man: The Movie – Reze Arc
Compared to Infinity Castle, Chainsaw Man works much better as a standalone experience, so newcomers won’t have many issues jumping straight into it. The movie adapts the Bomb Girl storyline, focusing on Denji’s new life as a Public Safety Devil Hunter when he crosses paths with a war-scarred Reze.
While it offers a glimpse of normalcy for the lonely Denji, things quickly spiral into explosive action, heartbreaking betrayal, and tragedy. The movie blends hyper-violence with mature themes, especially Denji’s traumatic past, elevating the story beyond a typical action fare.

1. Predator: Badlands
Predator: Badlands marked the IP’s return to the big screen, and Trachtenberg, as discussed previously, simply doesn’t miss. The movie took some huge swings with its story, whether by making a Yautja the protagonist of the story or by abandoning humans entirely for the movie.
The story follows Dek, a Yautja outcast, as he forms an unlikely alliance with a synthetic survivor during his quest for redemption on one of the most treacherous planets in the universe.
