The Avengers: Doomsday cast is stacked with returning fan favorites, which has opened the door for team ups some fans may never have expected to happen within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Which two heroes will team up in Avengers: Doomsday?
With the Avengers, New Avengers, Fantastic Four, and X-Men all confirmed for Doomsday, MCU fans will see the teams’ respective characters working together in unexpected ways. During his latest Q&A, trusted scooper Alex Perez of The Cosmic Circus revealed one team up in Doomsday he is most excited for is David Harbour‘s Red Guardian and Ebon Moss-Bachrach‘s The Thing.
While a Red Guardian/The Thing pairing may not initially make the most sense, those who have seen the post-credits scene in Thunderbolts* (a.k.a. *The New Avengers) will remember the title team was shown looking at footage of the Fantastic Four’s spacecraft entering their Earth. Perez’s comments suggest the New Avengers will intercept the spacecraft upon its arrival on Earth, leading to the Fantastic Four and New Avengers working closely together for the remainder of the movie.
Production on Doomsday has been underway since April 2025, with Joe and Anthony Russo back in the directors’ chairs, after having helmed the previous two Avengers movies — Infinity War (2018) and Endgame (2019). While plot details remain under wraps for Doomsday, the crossover movie is expected to serve as the first half of the conclusion of The Multiverse Saga, with its direct sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars, serving as the finale.

Doomsday will bring together several key characters from Phases 4 through 6 of the MCU, such as Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson/Captain America. All members of the New Avengers and Fantastic Four will also appear, as will several legacy cast members from 20th Century Fox’s X-Men franchise. Robert Downey Jr. will also be making his highly anticipated return to the MCU in Doomsday, although he won’t be back as Iron Man. Instead, the actor is taking on the role of iconic Fantastic Four supervillain, Doctor Doom, who will serve as the main antagonist of both Doomsday and Secret Wars.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to hit theaters on December 18, 2026.
