Star City leaps months after the devastating ending to Episode 6 to show the impact of the dead cosmonauts on the show’s most important characters. However, at the very last moment, a shocking twist occurs when Sergei uses the frequency that the Venera mission operated on. Sergei has been part of the secret Venus mission since its inception, working with the Chief Designer after hours. Only his algorithm works with the spaceship, allowing him to figure out the unique transmission frequency on which data is being sent. Now we know that the Venera is Earthbound despite an explosion.
Sergei was extremely unhappy throughout this episode, wanting a shift in career. Who can blame him? The Chief Designer’s influence extended to every engineer around him, bringing life and hope as the USSR moved forward in scientific capabilities. With this new information coming to light after his attempt to leave things behind fails, there is still time for Raskova to destroy the ship before it reaches Earth.
What the Shocking Twist Means for Star City
The Earthbound Venera spaceship was originally a cautionary, tragic tale. With every member aboard presumed dead following the explosion at the end of Episode 6, Raskova has pretty much had her way. Star City has a completely different and oppressive regime following this, with the vibe being depressing for all its characters.
Straight out of a 1984 scenario, everyone was being surveilled and forced to put on a smile. Especially Anastasia. The poor cosmonaut had resorted to a life on the farm following her husband’s death during the secret mission. However, this episode turns the grief around as she realizes that there is a sliver of hope.
Raskova’s entire shtick since the start of Star City has been to bury secrets. She does so through any means necessary: torture and even death. The death of the cosmonauts was framed as an accident, not Raskova’s doing. The potential uproar from the citizens of the USSR is frightening to think about if they figure out their own government killed heroes.
There is another potential worry: Valya. The spy who’s been transmitting secrets was exposed, leading to Raskova’s decision. If Valya is alive, his very existence is another big black mark on the USSR’s image. How they will handle this situation will be tricky, to say the least.
Episode 7: Star City’s True Agenda Revealed

Star City Episode 7 showed us the real truth of why Star City was established. Despite beating the Americans in the space race, a space station was established to spy on them. Transmission of the film unfortunately landed on US soil, triggering a nationwide emergency.
As expected, none of the engineers were on board with this. Being curious and scientific by nature, they clearly dismiss the notion that years of their hard work were not being used to further mankind’s exploration of space. After all, Star City was built on dreams and promises that turned into bureaucratic nightmares.
With the Chief Designer replaced, none of them is inspired. The ending to Episode 6 killed their optimism when an engineer was forced to kill everyone aboard the Venera. While we still don’t know if everyone aboard the ship is alive, given the explosion, this is a major turning point.
The engineers can once again build hope that Star City is on track to explore Venus and the wonders of the cosmos. Or if Raskova/Petrovsky have their way, the framing of the narrative can result in more catastrophe. This truly puts an unexpected spin on what’s to come, leaving us tense for the final episode of Season 1 of Star City.
