The Duffer Brothers have addressed viewers’ biggest concern with the final season of Stranger Things, the absence of Demogorgons or other creatures beyond Vecna in The Abyss. Considering it has been described as the true home dimension for these dark entities, the lack of creatures reasonably rubbed fans the wrong way, and according to the Duffer brothers, this was a deliberate decision on their part (via The Wrap).
Elaborating on it, Matt Duffer explained that Vecna was caught off guard on home turf, suggesting he was not expecting an attack. Although there were discussions to incorporate a demo battle on top of the Mind Flayer battle, the idea was further scrapped as the Duffers argued the Mind Flayer wouldn’t need to resort to a giant army of Demos.
Mainly it’s just that Vecna was not expecting this sneak attack on his home turf. Never in a million years could he even imagine that. They’re there somewhere. We obviously discussed having a demo battle on top of the Mind Flayer battle, but it felt more right to us that why does he need the demos when the Mind Flayer is this giant thing and can attack them? He doesn’t need his little ant army to attack, he’s going to take care of this himself.
Although the reasoning is easy to grasp, the fact that it was never explicitly explained, even though the series boasts a reputation for overexplaining things, many are not content with Duffer’s defence of the plothole.

The Duffer Brothers Wanted Vecna to Remain the Central Focus
While this works as an in-world explanation, the real creative reason behind the Demogorgons’ absence was the Duffers’ desire to keep Vecna front and centre, stressing they did everything they wanted to do with Demos back in Sorcerer.
Even though they even entertained the prospect of incorporating a giant field of demo eggs, reminiscent of the Xenomorph eggs from Aliens, the idea was eventually dumped because of Demo fatigue.
One of the other things we talked about was just demo fatigue. I felt like we did everything we wanted to do with them in ‘Sorcerer,’ and wanting to keep the focus on Vecna and the Mind Flayer, who’s been absent this season.
Despite its numerous issues, the show concluded the five-season-long journey on a largely satisfying note. However, this won’t be the last we see from this IP, which was expected.
What’s Next for Stranger Things: What We Know About the Spin-Off
Even though the mainline show has now ended, the IP will continue to branch out in the coming years, starting with Stranger Things: Tales from ’85, which premieres on the streamer this year.

Created by showrunner Eric Robles and Stranger Things co-creators Matt and Ross Duffer, it’s important to note that the OG cast won’t be returning to voice their characters, which makes sense for an animated spin-off.
