Netflix does not usually go out of its way to promote a movie it did not make. So, when it went down that route this week, people noticed. The streamer posted a GIF of Samara Weaving on X, pulled straight from Ready or Not, and the intent was not subtle.
It was a nudge to subscribers that the film is sitting right there in the library, waiting. For anyone who missed it the first time, Ready or Not hit theaters on August 21, 2019, through Fox Searchlight Pictures. It landed on Netflix on September 1, 2026.

The setup of this horror thriller is beautifully nasty. Grace marries into the absurdly wealthy Le Domas family and spends her wedding night at their ancestral estate. The family tradition says the new bride must draw a card and play a game. She draws hide-and-seek. Her in-laws, it turns out, intend to hunt her down and kill her before sunrise.
Directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the movie made over $57 million on a $6 million budget and holds an 89% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Samara Weaving’s Ready or Not Dominated Netflix Through Last Week

The Netflix post did not come out of nowhere. Following its debut on the platform, Ready or Not just had a genuinely impressive run on the platform’s charts. According to FlixPatrol, the 2019 thriller climbed to No. 6 among Netflix’s most-watched movies in the U.S. on both September 7 and September 8.
It is great for a catalog title that is seven years old and was not produced by Netflix. It slipped to No. 9 on September 9, dropped again to No. 10 on September 10, and fell off the top 10 entirely after that.
Which makes the timing of the GIF look very deliberate. Netflix’s algorithm feeds on visibility, and a title that has just tumbled out of the top 10 is exactly the kind of thing a well-placed social post can push back up.
Horror also happens to be a genre that benefits from a nudge in September, with spooky season a few weeks out and subscribers starting to hunt for something to watch in the dark.
The film also has fresh momentum working in its favor. Ready or Not 2: Here I Come arrived in theaters in March 2026, bringing Weaving back as Grace, and plenty of viewers are only now circling back to the original.

Ready or Not was Weaving’s first leading role in an American theatrical film, and it changed everything for her. What makes the performance work is the range she covers in 95 minutes. Grace starts the night as a nervous bride desperate for her new family’s approval.
She ends the movie torn up, furious, and completely done being polite. Weaving sells the terror, the exhaustion, and the gallows humor without any of it feeling like a different character, which is a genuinely hard thing to pull off in a film this tonally wild.
Horror fans noticed her performance and labelled her a modern scream queen. She started landing more roles, including The Babysitter: Killer Queen, Scream VI, Damien Chazelle’s Babylon, and Over Your Dead Body, before returning as Grace for the 2026 sequel.
Then came the big one. In July 2026, Marvel Studios cast Weaving as Emma Frost in the MCU’s X-Men, directed by Thunderbolts* filmmaker Jake Schreier. She joins a cast that includes Kit Connor, Sadie Sink, Christopher Abbott, Inde Navarrette, Maya Boyd, and Adam Driver. X-Men opens on May 5, 2028.
