Neon Genesis Evangelion did something wonderfully strange with the anime monster: it stopped making monsters look like monsters. The Angels are mysterious beings that descend upon Tokyo-3, each forcing NERV and the Evangelions to confront a threat whose biology and behavior can barely be understood. Their designs became one of the show’s defining signatures precisely because they refuse a single visual language.
Some resemble humanoids, others look like geometry, shadows, birds, or nightmares made of light. First airing in 1995 under creator-director Hideaki Anno and Gainax, the series initially built a relatively small audience before exploding into a cultural phenomenon and profoundly influencing anime. But the best-designed Angel isn’t necessarily the strongest. This ranking weighs visual identity, originality, symbolism, animation, psychological impact, and narrative function.

Arael is proof that an Angel doesn’t need a conventional body to be visually unforgettable. Appearing in orbit as a gigantic, jagged creature made almost entirely of brilliant blue-white light, it resembles a celestial bird stripped of anything comforting about birds. Its enormous wingspan gives it an almost beautiful silhouette, but that beauty becomes sinister once its real purpose emerges. Arael uses its A.T. Field offensively, projecting a beam that probes directly into the human mind.
That combination of luminous elegance and psychological violation is quintessential Evangelion: something that looks heavenly becomes deeply invasive. Its design also fits the Angel’s traditional association with birds without reducing it to a literal animal imitation.
4. Zeruel Looks Like Evangelion’s Ultimate Killing Machine

Zeruel looks as if someone took the concept of a humanoid Angel and sharpened every threatening feature. Its bulky body, skeletal shoulders, enormous concealed eyes and bizarre ribbon-like arms create a silhouette that is immediately recognizable and deeply hostile. Those arms are the real design masterstroke. Folded against its body, they look almost ornamental; once deployed, they become impossibly long blades capable of slicing through Evangelions.
Its face can also change consistency, shifting between a rigid mask and something disturbingly flexible. Designed by Yoshito Asari, Zeruel was built around an imposing physical presence that perfectly complements its direct assault on NERV Headquarters.
3. Sachiel Made Evangelion’s Angels Instantly Iconic

Sachiel had the unenviable job of introducing viewers to Evangelion’s Angels, and its design immediately announced that this was not going to be another parade of standard anime monsters. Its elongated limbs, hunched humanoid frame, skeletal armor, and expressionless mask create a disturbing imitation of a human body. Even stranger, its face can change, making the familiar mask suddenly feel alive.
Yoshito Asari designed Sachiel, with the final concept developing from an earlier amphibious-humanoid idea; intriguingly, the design originated from a prototype character from Asari’s manga Wahhaman. Sachiel’s first battle also gave Evangelion one of its signature visual images: an Angel dying in an explosion of cross-shaped light.
2. Leliel’s Nightmare Design Still Haunts Evangelion Fans
Leliel might be the most devious visual trick in the series. At first, it appears as an enormous black-and-white striped sphere hovering above Tokyo-3. Then Evangelion reveals the horrifying joke: that isn’t really Leliel’s body. Its actual manifestation is the seemingly harmless shadow spread across the ground, while the sphere functions as its shadow.
The design turns something as mundane as a patch of darkness into a dimensional trap capable of swallowing Unit-01. Its bizarre proportions (an enormous body only nanometers thick) make Leliel feel like a physics problem rather than an organism. The result is pure Evangelion: the scariest thing in the room is the thing nobody initially recognizes as alive.

Ramiel looks almost offensively simple: a gigantic, translucent blue octahedron floating above Tokyo-3. And somehow, that makes it terrifying. Its perfect geometry strips away every familiar biological cue, while its reflective surface, distorted light, and emotionless stillness make it feel less like a creature than an impossible object that wandered into reality.
The design’s genius becomes even clearer when Ramiel transforms its geometric form while attacking. Its clinical shape pairs beautifully with its behavior: it calmly drills toward the Geofront, then obliterates anything that threatens it with a devastating beam. Ramiel was designed by Yoshito Asari, who also created Sachiel and Zeruel.
