Spoiler Alert !!!This article contains spoilers for Masters of the Universe
Masters of the Universe had a setup for its sequel in place with a series of post-credit scenes. Whether it is going to get that sequel depends entirely on how the box office collection for the film turns out to be, but the setup brings some exciting prospects for the franchise to the forefront. As Adam came into his role as the champion of Eternia, taking up the mantle of He-Man, his twin sister seemed to be facing similar struggles, coming into her own as She-Ra. Further, a classic character that was missing from the film, Orko, made an appearance, too
One Masters of the Universe‘s post-credit scene saw Evil-Lyn take Skeletor’s skull, heavily implying an attempt will be made to resurrect the villain. However, with She-Ra’s nemesis Hordak thrown in the mix, who in some versions of the canon is depicted as the master of Skeletor, the stage might be set for He-Man and She-Ra to be on a collision course. A sequel could echo the first crossover that they had, which then branched into two separate Masters of the Universe IPs, one that focused on She-Ra, and the other that focused on He-Man.

She-Ra, in her previous two incarnations, started out as a member of Hordak’s army before discovering the Sword of Protection, which opened her eyes to the evil machinations of Hordak. However, as revealed in the mid-credit scene of the film, She-Ra has already rejected Hordak and has come into her own as the champion of good, like her brother.
This could suggest more than a few things for the sequel, such as the fact that it might not be an origin story for She-Ra, but something that is more akin to The Secret of the Sword, the animated feature that introduced She-Ra to audiences, and had He-Man in a starring role as well. This could lead to a team-up film that similarly splits the franchise into two distinct IPs, one that follows Adam and the other that follows Adora, but still existing in the same continuity.
Sh-Ra’s involvement in the franchise, as it did for the animated series, is going to open up the franchise to a whole new demographic. Further, if Mattel gets the casting and execution of such a film right, it could seize upon the Wonder Woman hype that has been building in the DCU fandom.

A Masters of the Universe sequel is likely going to involve Adora in some capacity, but the franchise might hold off on Skeletor for the sequel. Given that He-Man just fought the character in the Masters of the Universe, it would make much more sense if Adora and Adam had to face off against a new threat, namely Hordak. This version, like many versions before it, could slot in Hordak as the master of Skeletor, upping the ante for the heroes. However, there is no official announcement for a sequel, and no plans for what they might look like have been made public either. The sequel will also likely feature Orko, one of the most iconic characters to come out of the Masters of the Universe franchise. He also featured in the mid-credit scene.
There is much that remains up in the air for the franchise, and none of it is going to bear fruit until the box office numbers begin looking worth the effort. For now, it seems that Masters of the Universe might not be tracking very well (via Deadline), which might be a disappointing start. Even Scary Movie 6‘s box office opening records have left behind Masters of the Universe. However, additional revenue generated through merchandise might just allow Mattel Studios to greenlight a sequel for the franchise.
Currently, there seems to be a power vacuum that modern franchise cinema seems to be heading towards. With Star Wars scrambling towards a new trilogy of films, Marvel looking to seemingly retool the MCU in the next two years, and the DCU very much in its infancy, an established and accomplished brand like Masters of the Universe could seize upon the opportunity of taking hold of the cultural zeitgeist. Barbie has already set the stage for toy-line-led films to make the big bucks in at cinemas, and upcoming films like the ThunderCats project could carve out a niche where a brand like Mattel, and by extension, He-Man, prospers.
