And the wild part? Modulo doesn’t treat Gojo’s death like a tragic accident; it treats it like a full-on worldbuilding necessity. Through new lore, Yuji Itadori’s bizarre survival and the state of the jujutsu world centuries later, Modulo basically says the strongest sorcerer wasn’t supposed to live forever because the world couldn’t grow while he was there.

His existence made the entire jujutsu society a lazy, over-dependent mess. The higher-ups stopped evolving, clans stopped innovating, and sorcerers thought that Gojo could solve everything – fix everything and protect anyone. And then he got sealed, and the whole system collapsed.
Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo‘s future society shows how fundamentally everything was broken during Gojo’s lifetime. The world did not grow or evolve – it stagnated. Why? Well, because of a small line from Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 220 where Shoko says Yuji’s body has become “steeped” in cursed energy – basically turning him into a living cursed object. With all of the Sukuna fingers he ate, along with the Death Painting brothers inside him, added to Kenjaku’s engineered vessel origin, Yuji’s biology became something that basically doesn’t age.
Unlike Gojo, however, Yuji refuses to turn into the world’s new unstoppable guardian. Modulo reveals he went off-grid, living as a rogue sorcerer so that the jujutsu world doesn’t repeat the same dependency cycle it had with Gojo. Yuji’s immortality becomes the anti-Gojo. He lives forever but refuses to let the world rely on him.
Gojo’s battle with Sukuna will always be peak Jujutsu Kaisen; however, Modulo gives us a bigger emotional punch. It wasn’t just a fight between the two strongest – it was the end of an era that needed to end.
Gojo’s victory would’ve frozen the world in place. His death pushed the world forward. And Yuji’s survival ensures that the future doesn’t fall into the same trap again. So Modulo doesn’t just explain why Gojo died – it explains why he had to.
