The 2025 BAFTA Games Awards were quite special for Arrowhead Game Studios as Helldivers 2 has managed to bag two more major awards. A much-deserved win, as Arrowhead, despite being an indie developer, has managed to create such an exciting experience that many modern video games can’t compete with, even with massive funding.
The studio is backed by Sony, but initially, no one expected the game to blow up so much. In fact, the studio didn’t even have enough resources to accommodate so many players. Currently, the game is one of the best co-op games in the world, but the journey was not easy.

After securing the award, Johan Pilestedt, Arrowhead’s Chief Creative Officer, explained the game’s true purpose: connecting with your friends. The game heavily emphasizes the importance of teamwork, and Arrowhead is glad that it is able to help players connect with their childhood friends through this co-op experience.
Helldivers 2 helps players connect with their old gaming groups
Helldivers 2 managed to win 2 BAFTA awards at the 2025 BAFTA Games Awards in the Multiplayer and Music categories. Johan Pilestedt, along with the development team, went to the stage to collect the award. During the acceptance speech, Pilestedt highlighted the importance of multiplayer gaming and how it helps players connect with their old pals (via BAFTAGames),
Multiplayer means so much to me, because to me, games are about connecting people – When I moved down to… Stockholm… Games was the source of me being able to stay connected to my childhood friends, to my brother, to my family and to see that so many people have experienced Helldivers in the same way and all the testimonials that we get from players saying like how they got back with their gaming groups that they had 10-15 years ago due to our game is such an honour.
The game indeed provides players with an exceptional co-op experience, so it definitely deserves that award in the Multiplayer category. The game focuses on spreading democracy with teamwork, although keeping friendly fire on might have backfired.

Everyone can see the awards and praises right now, but no one knows the efforts the developers at Arrowhead had to put in to keep the game alive. When Helldivers 2 was first released, it quickly became a worldwide sensation, to the point where the servers couldn’t handle it. The game was doing well, but then came Sony’s PSN account linking policy.

The game was already being criticized for losing its charm due to nerfs, but the policy forced players to uninstall the game. Helldivers 2‘s Steam page was bombarded with negative reviews, and its active player count dipped significantly. Arrowhead then decided to change its strategy and devised a 60-day plan to save the game. Fortunately, it worked out, and it has put Helldivers 2 on the top charts once again.
