James Wan, renowned as one of the most prolific filmmakers in the realm of horror, has joined forces with Blumhouse to revive the Paranormal Activity franchise (via The Hollywood Reporter). Following the merger between Wan’s own production house, Atomic Monster, and Blumhouse, the auteur will serve as a producer on the movie, alongside Paramount, which will also distribute the movie.
While little is known about the project and its direction, with director Oren Peli, who helmed the OG entry that pushed Blumhouse to mainstream, returning as a producer, the movie is said to be a priority at Paramount.
James Wan Has Big Plans for the Paranormal Activity IP
While the original Paranormal Activity is regarded as the epitome of found footage horror, which was previously popularized by The Blair Witch Project, the latter entries in the series didn’t quite recapture the original’s magic.

Although the IP has been sitting dormant for some years after the less-than-thrilling reception to Next of Kin, the Conjuring filmmaker eyes to expand the legacy of the series. Being a fan of the first movie himself, which he lauded for its approach to the genre, Wan wants to mark the next evolution of found-footage horrors with this reimagining.
I’ve been a huge admirer of Paranormal Activity since the brilliant first movie, with its creeping slow burn and subtle ability to make the unseen terrifying. I’m looking forward to expanding on its legacy and helping shape the next evolution of this scary found-footage franchise.
Even though he won’t be helming the director’s chair for the next installment in the series, given his enthusiasm for the movie, it’s safe to say the franchise is in good hands. Details regarding the director and plot remain under wraps.
