The Star Wars universe right now is in flux more than ever just as Tony Gilroy attempts to land the second season of his acclaimed Disney+ series, Andor. With Diego Luna in the lead, the spin-off series ventures into further unknown territories in the farthest reaches of the Galactic Empire. However, the second season, despite all its promises of adventure, will also be its final outing.

Meanwhile, series creator and showrunner Tony Gilroy has little to shy away from while discussing the fate of his show. As one of the most critically acclaimed series in the Star Wars mythology, Andor is expected to not only run long but also have an equally long shelf life. But not everything under Disney’s purview comes to pass.

In the fringes of the Galactic Empire, Tony Gilroy takes his audience to a land of political corruption and familiar authoritarianism that is far from the turmoil of grand interstellar battles involving lightsabers and Sith lords. Andor takes a page out of the Star Wars bible and transports the story to a more grounded and stark reality than the epic sci-fi space opera the fans are used to.
In the post Rise of Skywalker era, Disney needed to find a story that could restore the audience’s faith in the Star Wars universe, and Andor succeeded exactly where The Acolyte failed. The series starring Diego Luna was not removed enough from the source to make the fans scoff at its prospect, yet it was innovative enough to make the fans want more by the end of Season 1.

Now, Gilroy is more than happy to flesh out his universe with all of its human elements and the fight against the Empire, but the series format of telling a live-action story is so excruciating, laborious, and time-consuming that not even his passion for Star Wars can make Tony Gilroy plan a universe beyond 2 seasons.

If Disney had handed him a blank check and all the time in the world, perhaps Tony Gilroy would have considered telling the story of Cassian Andor, his origin, his upbringing, and eventually the catalyst that landed him on the path of the revolution against the Empire.
However, with a limited timeframe to operate within, the metrics of streaming, and the immense chasm of 2.5 years between the 2 seasons of the show, Gilroy factors in a realistic approach to the story arc of Andor and decides that Season 2 is as far as he can go with it.

In an interview with Gizmodo, the showrunner revealed why he whittled down the original plan for Andor‘s five-season arc into two:
How are we going to do these five years? It was just impossible, absolutely impossible… If I was going to design this in a perfect world, I would spend one year on [Cassian’s] education and the transformation into a revolutionary. I think that one season really fits that way, and I would stick with what we did on the way out, because it just, energy-wise, it just, I don’t really have anything else to say about it.
Now, the second and final season of Andor will have 12 episodes in total and is set to come out in 3-episode arcs with time jumps in between. Each arc will traverse the events of a single year leading up to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
Andor Season 2 will premiere on Disney+ on April 22, 2025.
