Hideo Kojima has weighed in on Sony’s plan to phase out physical PlayStation game discs by 2028. The gaming industry veteran called the move “really sad” while wishing it wasn’t true.
However, Kojima didn’t just stop there! He highlighted that a similar fate could be in store for movies as well. As such, the 62-year-old is busy purchasing Blu-rays and CDs of various movies!

Kojima was speaking at the Il Cinema in Piazza film festival in Italy, and the topic of PlayStation going digital cropped up. The Japanese game designer highlighted that he grew up with physical media, and this new world will be a bit different for him. However, he also highlighted a silver lining in games going digital (via Kotaku).
They are downloaded to the hard drive, that means the game data remains on your own hardware.
However, he pointed out that other media, such as movies and series, are now mostly accessible only through streaming. So, there’s no data on the user’s hardware, and that data can vanish with a click of a button.
With nations, politics and various ways of thinking, one naturally has to consider the possibility that if there is a change, the data inside will stop being distributed.
Kojima pointed out that a similar fate could be waiting for games as well. There has been a push to make games go the streaming route as well. The Death Stranding director wants everyone to be ready for that eventual future.
If that happens you won’t be able to watch or play the movies and games you like. That is what is frightening. So, what is happening to video games in 2028, might also happen to movies. I’d like everyone to keep that in mind.
However, Kojima himself did not touch on the matter, but the future he is warning against is already here! Sony, earlier this month, removed more than 500 previously purchased movies from users’ libraries (via Nerdist).

Sony’s decision to stop selling new PlayStation games on disc around the PS6 era has already sparked backlash. It’s all about ownership, preservation, and consumer rights. This move by industry giants not only generated serious discussions but also several brands, such as KFC, Nintendo, and others, mocked them for it (via Games.gg).
Gamers aren’t supportive of the move as well! A Change.org petition titled, “Don’t Kill the Disc: Tell Sony to Keep Physical PlayStation Games,” has gained more than 98,000 signatures, and it isn’t the only petition out there!
Kojima’s comments tap directly into that mood! For many players, the fight over PlayStation discs isn’t just nostalgia. It’s about whether games and movies remain things you own or become subscriptions.
Do you agree with Hideo Kojima’s comments regarding games and movies going digital? Do you think Sony will change its course? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
