It seems like every few years, one foreign film takes Hollywood by surprise, leaving all the biggest industries and their films in the dust. A few years ago, it was Parasite. And now, just when the industry seems to be gaining its momentum, after the Pandemic and the Writers-Actors strike, Godzilla Minus One has stomped in to reign his terror on Tinseltown (for once, instead of Tokyo).

In its roaring rampage at the box office, it seems Godzilla Minus One has managed to achieve what even the greatest of franchises has failed to do this year. As the year comes to a close, Godzilla Minus One might stomp its way to one of the greatest feats of the year, one that even Marvel failed to achieve with its army of superheroes.

Godzilla Minus One managed one of the lowest 2nd-week drops of the year

As Godzilla Minus One continues to wow the world by going back to its roots, the film has managed to do something that has been largely difficult for other productions to achieve. According to Deadline, the film ended up grossing a decent $17 million in its first week. However, in the second week, the film has managed to register a drop of only 27%, one of the lowest in the industry for 2023.
The film follows a host of familiar beats that established the Kaiju genre, making the film largely distinct from Legendary’s MonsterVerse and its Godzilla, who appears in more of a heroic light. The Godzilla depicted in Minus One is more akin to the beast that originally appeared in the first Godzilla, a horrific radiation-laden mutant, a direct result of nuclear testing. Riding the wave of this film’s popularity is Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire made by Legendary, releasing its trailer just as the film takes the industry by storm. Talk about a monster-sized opportunity.

Marvel wishes it had Godzilla Minus One‘s box office drop

This year, while MonsterVerse rides the wave of its eastern counterpart, another Hollywood franchise faced one of its worst years since the pandemic. Marvel delivered to the theatres 3 feature-length films in 2023: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, The Marvels and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. And each of the films had a second-week drop that was way worse than what Godzilla Minus One faced.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3, arguably the best Marvel property to come out this year, faced a drop of 47.6%, according to CNBC, which was not as bad as what the other offerings faced at the box office. Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania faced a drop of 57% according to Deadline, leaving the film reeling from disappointed box office returns. However, the Marvel film that suffered the biggest second-week drop, and the first proper dud that the studio had, was The Marvels, with a whopping 80% drop in its second week, according to The Hollywood Reporter making it the Marvel film with the highest drop in its second week.
Godzilla Minus One managed to maintain its second-week drop, something that Marvel struggled to do this year. Does this indicate a shift in the industry? Only time will tell whether it is superhero fatigue or just bad filmmaking that is affecting superhero films in Hollywood. Or perhaps it could be the rising interest in Kaiju movies, as demonstrated by the box office of MonsterVerse films.
