Doctor Who has received an update about its next season. The announcement provides some details about what fans can expect from the next chapter.
According to Deadline, the BBC has launched a competitive tender for the next chapter of Doctor Who. The tender invites production companies to pitch ideas and creative directions for the show. It calls for an ambitious and cinematic approach to the next chapter of the franchise. The previous season’s star Ncuti Gatwa has already departed alongside production company Bad Wolf and showrunner Russell T. Davies.

The BBC’s vision for Doctor Who goes beyond finding its next Doctor
There are some complications when it comes to finding a new Doctor, if that is indeed what the BBC is interested in. Gatwa’s departure from the show after just a single season saw him seemingly regenerate into a version of himself who wore Billie Piper’s face.
Piper famously played Rose Tyler, the companion of David Tennant’s Doctor during his first run on the series. However, the tender leaves open the possibility of introducing a new Doctor.
According to the tender document, the BBC is seeking pitches for a series that could be broadcast in 2028-29. Pitches should include “at least one” developed companion character. The show is looking beyond simply working with a new doctor. The BBC is looking for stories that “feel cinematic, distinctive, and ambitious, capable of competing for audience attention in a highly competitive global market.”
It also stated what exactly it will be looking for in successful pitches. It stated that they would deliver “back of the sofa scares, jeopardy, and tension,” while exploring themes of “the human condition” and celebrating “curiosity, courage, intelligence, and compassion.”
The broadcaster has not provided fixed budgets for the pitches and has invited producers to propose third-party investment sources as part of their submissions.
