J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series that defined an entire generation, spoke to The Times (UK) in 2000 about her relationship with Steven Spielberg before Christopher Columbus directed the first film (via Accio Quote!):
I have spoken to Steven Spielberg. Did I have a fight with him? No, I definitely did not. I read that in an article and was mystified. There were things he said that I didn’t agree with, there were things he said that I did agree with. Let’s just put it this way: I am very happy with the director we’ve got.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was directed by Christopher Columbus, and skyrocketed the franchise into the stratosphere, almost earning $1B at the box office against a $125M budget during its initial release (via BoxOfficeMojo). Clearly, the choice for Columbus to direct the film worked despite Spielberg’s declining to work with the film.
Why Steven Spielberg Chose Not to Work With Harry Potter
Steven Spielberg was originally approached to direct the first Harry Potter film after J.K. Rowling sold the rights to her book to Warner Bros. The filmmaker declined due to creative differences over his vision for how the medium of the film should be.

However, despite the massive success of the film series, Spielberg has no regrets about turning the offer down. Speaking to RRR director S.S. Rajamouli, Spielberg recalled that he chose his family over directing the film (via Business Insider):
There were several films I chose not to make. They offered me ‘Harry Potter’ and I chose to turn down the first ‘Harry Potter’ to basically spend the next year and a half with my family, my young kids growing up. So, I sacrificed a great franchise — which today looking back I’m very happy to have done — to be with my family
The Jaws filmmaker would have had to sacrifice quality family time to move to another country for four months to shoot the film. His kids thought he was “crazy” not to make the Harry Potter films. He told BBC Breakfast (via Digital Spy),
I just felt that I wasn’t ready to make an all-kids movie and my kids thought I was crazy. And the books were by that time popular, so when I dropped out, I knew it was going to be a phenomenon.
