He earned the title by accomplishing what no one could in the One Piece universe. After all, this is exactly what started the entire story of the franchise.
Roger and his crew then set sail across the Grand Line and became the first to reach the fictional island of Laugh Tale. He did that with the help of Oden, who could decipher the clues from the Road Poneglyphs that led them to the One Piece treasure.
Around age 53, he voluntarily disbanded his crew and turned himself in to be executed. Back then, he was already suffering from an illness that had no cure. The story paints his last moments as a man who laughed in the face of death. Obviously, this was a fitting farewell to his grand and stoic nature as the Pirate King, who was getting publicly executed.
Now, simply getting executed would have been an injustice to a character like him. Roger surprised the world and even his fans by announcing that his “real treasure” was up for grabs by anyone who could find it. His treasure: the legendary and mythical One Piece. Roger’s influence permeates the One Piece saga long after his death. Every Straw Hat pirate grew up idolizing the Pirate King’s story. Luffy grew up with an ambition to supersede the Pirate King and find his treasure. He didn’t know Roger personally, but he found a connection with the man himself, and that was enough to fuel young Luffy’s dreams. Throughout the series, we see Luffy trying to enact Roger’s hearty laughter or stand tall on some of his ideals.

Many events in the series directly stem from Roger’s legacy. For example, Curly Dadan secretly raises Ace (Roger’s son), Ace loses to Whitebeard multiple times, and then joins his crew. Furthermore, Fleet Admiral Sengoku decides to execute Ace publicly, fearing Roger’s bloodline. This, in turn, led to the Marineford War. A lot transpired, directly or indirectly, due to Roger.
Even outside of Ace’s story, other characters remember Roger in their own ways. Whitebeard spoke of him with a certain respect, despite being his rival. In the anime and manga, we see flashback scenes of Roger with figures like Rayleigh, Oden, and even battling rivals like Whitebeard.
Now, was there really a treasure so priceless as the “One Piece”? That’s something we will learn once Oda decides to end his anime/manga. But for now, Roger and his treasure remain the heart of the story. As of the time of writing, fans have taken to social media to celebrate Roger.
On December 31, One Piece fans mark Roger’s birthday with enthusiasm. The official One Piece X (Twitter) account posted, “HAPPY BIRTHDAY GOL.D.ROGER,” and shared new artwork of the Pirate King. In fact, ComicBook reported that the official channels ran two separate visuals for this occasion. One was an edited banner, and another was a brand-new illustration of Roger wielding his sword in a battle-ready pose.
