There are different optional areas behind colored keys in Beast of Reincarnation, and the Red Key is usually the first one players run into. It sits behind a story flag rather than a simple item pickup, which confuses a lot of people early on. This guide walks through where the Red Key becomes available and which locked door it’s meant to open.

The Red Key isn’t something you can grab early by exploring the Ogouchi Buffer Zone. Instead, it’s tied directly to Chapter 1’s main story. Once the storyline pushes Emma and Koo toward the locked door leading into the Nushi’s Lair in Subcity 03, a short cutscene plays out. The Retired Gatekeeper stationed nearby hands over the Red Key automatically as part of that scene, so there’s no separate puzzle or fight required to claim it.
How to Reach Subcity 03
Getting to this point takes a while, since Subcity 03 only opens up after clearing an earlier confrontation with the Region’s Nushi and following the main quest past the Rusted Golem encounter south of the entrance. It’s worth saving at the nearby campsite, Nushi’s Lair Gate: Approach, before continuing, since there are a few tougher fights in this patch.
The moment Emma and Koo arrive at the sealed entrance to Nushi’s Lair in Subcity 03, a scene kicks in, and the Retired Gatekeeper there simply hands the key over as part of it.
What the Red Key Unlocks

The Red Key doesn’t actually open anything in Subcity 03. Its real use is all the way back in the Abandoned Village, the area Emma and Koo pass through at the start of the game, well before Chapter 1’s story gets going.
It’s a minor reward rather than anything essential, so there’s no need to rush back immediately, especially with Yellow and Blue Key hunts still ahead before the main path forward opens up.
The Red Key is more of a story milestone than a collectible, so the fastest way to get it is simply pushing through Chapter 1 until Subcity 03. Once it’s in your inventory, going back to the Abandoned Village is optional, but it might just be worth it before you get to chasing down the other keys.
