Avatar: Seven Havens, an upcoming sequel series in the Avatar: The Last Airbender universe, finally showed its hand at San Diego Comic-Con this week, and not everyone liked what they saw. The first teaser for the animated sequel premiered Thursday at the panel. While fans rallied to defend Korra against trailer narration implying she’d failed, there were others who had other things on their mind: the show doesn’t look like Avatar anymore. Seven Havens is an animated sequel that is canon to the Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise. It is set generations after Korra. Notably, the sequel is created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, the franchise’s original creators. They returned to launch the show under their own Avatar Studios banner after departing Netflix’s live-action Last Airbender adaptation. But for longtime fans, the visual overhaul is jarring. Gone is the polished anime-style design of the original. The new design seems to be a little more painterly and surreal.

This reaction to Avatar: Seven Havens also speaks to the wider issue that established animated properties find themselves up against. While it is expected for a live-action show to change its look via cinematography or art design, animation typically takes on its unique identity through a visual language. Changing this language instantly makes an established world seem strange to the audience.
Bryan Konietzko hasn’t been shy about the visual shift being intentional. He described the new look during SDCC 2025 as “something totally different” (via IGN). He explained that the creators like to make each project its own thing, and that while it still feels like Avatar, the world itself is very different — which has an explanation within the story that the fans can only discover through viewing. Another major inspiration for the new look of this series has come directly from anime of the 1990s era.
Bottom line: this isn’t a budget-driven downgrade or a botched adaptation. It’s a deliberate rebrand, aimed at signaling that the post-Korra Avatarverse — one where being the Avatar marks you as a destroyer rather than a savior — needed to look like a different world entirely.
The Fan Backlash, Explained

The reaction quickly fell into predictable categories. In tandem with the support of Korra’s legacy was the legitimate critique offered by a portion of the fan community regarding the SDCC teaser’s portrayal of a shift away from the look of the original series and Korra’s world. This kind of frustration is not unfamiliar in long-running animated series. Any change in the house style, no matter how well-intentioned and creatively reasoned it is, feels to some fans like a loss of identity for the show.
The original Avatar: The Last Airbender, which was included in FandomWire’s list of 100 greatest shows of all time, has experienced a huge resurgence in recent years thanks to the efforts of Netflix, animation, comics, and other media. This has not only led to an increase in popularity but also a fierce attachment to a very clear visual aesthetic that has become ingrained in people’s minds as to what Avatar: The Last Airbender is supposed to look like. Asking the fans to embrace a radically different aesthetic in Avatar: Seven Havens at the same time they’re being introduced to a brand-new Avatar was always going to be an uphill battle.
