RAM prices have skyrocketed in the gaming tech world due to demand, and it’s not expected to go down any time soon. But dark times like these bring innovation, and sometimes competition. It’s currently rumored that ASUS is working towards manufacturing DRAM itself in 2026, while Russian enthusiasts are trying to come up with a DIY approach. Here’s what you should note.

ASUS has dominated the PC market for a long time; however, it never quite entered the DRAM manufacturing market previously. According to an Iranian tech outlet, SakhtAfzarMag, ASUS is trying to enter the RAM market by the end of Q2 of 2026. On the contrary, according to CNYes, ASUS doesn’t have such plans.
If this information holds up, then 2026 would be an interesting year, considering the rise in DRAM prices due to AI and other technological advancements.
While this rumor raises hope, please take it all with a grain of salt. First and foremost, setting up DRAM manufacturing itself is a huge task for ASUS, and its entry into the space might not make part prices much lower.
Furthermore, this move might be ASUS’s way to capture the space Crucial (Micron), leaving the consumer market to cater towards AI. Even if ASUS enters the market, there’s no saying they’d sell the products at an inflated price due to all the demand.
Furthermore, Micron was one of the biggest players in the DRAM manufacturing market, and ASUS’s initial entry could replace the former’s legacy. So it would be a tough nut to crack, considering the situation of current market.
At the moment, it’s expected that the shortage of DRAM will last up to 2027, and experts believe it could extend into 2028 as well. Maybe the timeline will shift if other DRAM manufacturers come into play, but only time can dictate that.
Russia’s Unique Plan Leans on a DIY Approach

Leaving aside big manufacturers, a local Russian YouTuber, Vik-on (aka PRO Hi-Tech), has figured out their own way to build RAMs. The news arrived directly from his Telegram channel, where he has a solution for sourcing empty DIMM PCBs from China for cheap.
The main challenge arises with gathering memory chips because that’s what juices them. Knowing Micron has left the consumer market, there are still manufacturers like SK Hynix and Samsung.
The problem is, taking the DIY approach still makes each module cost around the current retail unit RAM prices. Also, Vik-on is known for modding GPUs with VRAM upgrades by resoldering them, so it’s not a method for regular people.
