The Russo Brothers have declared war. Not on Thanos, not on the multiverse, but on spoilers. In their mission to guard the secrets of Avengers: Doomsday, they’ve practically bubble-wrapped the entire production in NDAs, digital locks, and maybe even some Hogwarts-style enchantments.

They promised airtight security. They claimed they’d outwit the nosiest fans and the most eagle-eyed paparazzi. And then… the internet happened. A set photo allegedly showing James Marsden, yes, Cyclops himself from Fox’s X-Men movies, chilling with Magneto on the Avengers: Doomsday set leaked like it was trying to make the front page of the Daily Bugle.

And just like that, the Russo brothers’ spoiler shield cracked like Thor’s hammer through glass. Oops. So much for all that secrecy, huh? But let’s unpack the chaos, shall we? Because this photo is more than a leak; it’s a multiversal mic drop.

Is James Marsden going to be in Avengers: Doomsday?

Here’s the tea: a blurry, definitely-not-sanctioned set photo recently emerged online showing James Marsden, best known as the laser-eyed team player from the early 2000s X-Men films, standing alongside Magneto. While the authenticity hasn’t been confirmed by Marvel, fans are unsure what to believe.

kinda doubting this is real cause marvel wouldnt let the first look at cyclops and especially ian mckellen magneto leak so early on in filming but i love to see both back and i cant wait for doomsday next year!— 501stroopernate (@vlas40634) April 12, 2025

It’s more likely that they KNEW photos of them were going to get leaked regardless, and that’s exactly why they went ahead and announced everyone with those chairs ahead of time. I’d expect more of those announced actors, to be leaked on set soon too.— Taylor 🎃 (@Enerdtayment) April 12, 2025

Im sorry to break it to some…but these supposed leaked set photos of James Marsden, Wong and Ian McKellen re fake.Someone is just doing a good job with the AI or photoshop and fooling the net. 🤷🏻‍♂️#AvengersDoomsday pic.twitter.com/TFDAHUF0pn— X-MEN REBOOT (@XMenReboot) April 12, 2025

Naturally, this has set off a frenzy of theories hotter than Wanda’s chaos magic. Is Avengers: Doomsday finally going to give us that long-rumored collision between the Fox X-Men universe, Earth-10005, and Earth-616’s MCU? Are we looking at the formation of the Avengers: Secret Wars dream team? Is Marsden’s Cyclops going to survive more than one movie this time? Unlikely, but fun to hope.

What makes this leak extra juicy is the fact that Marsden’s Cyclops was not exactly a breakout character in the original X-Men films. This could be Marvel’s redemption arc for Scott Summers, the ultimate team leader who spent most of his career being sidelined by Wolverine’s raw physical charisma. Now he’s potentially sharing scenes with Magneto? Yeah, that’s a flex.

Russo Brothers tried to seal the vault

Before the leak, the Russo Brothers had been very vocal about locking down Avengers: Doomsday like it’s the Pentagon’s secret vault. In a recent interview with Collider, Joe and Anthony Russo detailed their multi-tiered defense strategy against leaks.

But let’s be honest: The MCU could be filming inside a volcano on Mars, and some blurry potato-cam footage would still make it to Reddit. It’s the nature of the beast. And when you’re dealing with a fanbase that once deduced Spider-Man: No Way Home’s cast from leaked set photos and pixel-level analysis, no force on Earth-838 can hold back the spoiler flood.

The irony is delicious. For all the Russo Brothers’ talk about secrecy, one rogue snapshot may have just revealed exactly where the multiverse saga is headed next. Or maybe it’s a clever misdirect. A classic Marvel red herring. Maybe Marsden was just visiting the set because he took a wrong turn on the Sony lot. Who knows?

But if this photo is the real deal, and let’s be honest, it feels like it is, then Marvel fans are in for a multiverse mashup that’ll make Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness look like a guided museum tour.

Avengers: Doomsday will be released in theatres on May 1, 2026.
