Spread the love

In the aftermath of her Xenomorph attack, Wendy seems to have unlocked a deeper connection with the creatures. At the same time, her brother’s lung has been seemingly confiscated by Prodigy and will be used to harvest another creature. It’s clear that Boy Kavalier (Samuel Blenkin) has some other tricks up his sleeve, but how the rest of the company rallies around him will be interesting. “Observation” gives us a peek at what is set for our favorite Hybrids and how Kirsh (Timothy Olyphant) is starting to feel undervalued.

Spoiler Alert !!!Review and Recap contains details of “Observation” and all episodes of Alien: Earth so far.

Alien: Earth — “Observation” Recap

Kirsch and Dame Sylvie stand over Wendy while Arthur confirms that the Hybrid’s hearing has been turned off. Kavalier enters the room with Curly, dismissing everyone but Arthur so he can speak with Wendy. However, before the conversation begins, Hermit (Alex Lawther) enters the room to talk with his sister. Kavalier introduces himself while joking about Hermit’s new lung.

Wendy tells Hermit about her hearing, which helps him realize Prodigy recovered the creatures from the crash. She tells the group about the sound, comparing it to the chirping of crickets, before revealing that she also heard the “baby” and facehugger screaming. Wendy believes the Xenomorphs picked her, and she wants to continue the relationship. Kavalier excitedly agrees and pushes her to recreate the sound for them to hear. She does, creating a frightening sound.

Arthur and Hermit push to give Wendy a rest. Kavalier reluctantly agrees, and the group leaves. Atom voices concerns that the creatures are dangerous. They should return them to Yutani now. Kavalier refuses and tells Atom to remind Hermit that he’s a soldier working for Prodigy. Wendy shows off her room and asks Hermit if he is mad at her. Her brother is not mad at her, but he is angry with Prodigy. Hermit apologizes that he was at war across the world when she was sick.

Kavlier reads Peter Pan in voice-over while Slightly hikes up the mountain to speak with Morrow. While Slightly is uneasy with their relationship, Morrow breaks through by calling the boy his friend. He gets Slightly to exchange their real names, and then demands that the boy bring him a Xenomorph egg. In Morrow’s mind, this is the moral thing to do.

Kirsh watches the footage of Slightly over the monitors and realizes what Morrow is doing. Back in his room, Slightly finds Kirsch waiting for him. Kirsch grills Slightly about morality, specifically about the idea of the three monkeys who “see no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil.” Morrow tells Slightly to be careful, and Slightly’s answers seem to satisfy Kirsch for now.

In the lab, Kirsch, Tootles, Atom, and Kavalier put the Ocellus in a glass case with a sheep. The eye-creature attaches itself to the sheep, killing it by ripping out its eye and burrowing itself in its place. Kirsch notes the creature’s high intelligence as it reanimates the corpse as a parasite. Kavalier and the creature stare each other down.

Arthur takes Sylvie into the jungle of the Neverland compound, preaching about the importance of scientific purity in their work. Sylvie tries to reason with him, but Arthur reveals a genuine worry that they killed six kids to create a hyperadvanced AI. Sylvie talks him down until they’re interrupted by Nibs. She announces that she is pregnant. Arthur tells Nibs that it is not possible, but Nibs insists otherwise.

Sylvie takes Nibs back to her office and tells her about sexual reproduction. Nibs already knows about the birds and the bees but reminds Sylvie that Jesus was born without sex. Sylvie eventually angers Nibs as she tries to get the girl to confront the truth. When Nibs has an aggressive outburst, Sylvie calls for help with a silent alarm. Prodigy soldiers come and escort Nibs back to her room.

Atom pressures Hermit to report on Wendy under penalty of hospital bills and separation from Wendy. Prodigy needs to confirm the transition worked, and when Hermit refuses, Atom explains that it will result in his immediate removal from the island. Hermit agrees to stay. Kavalier meets Wendy in a common area and tries to drive a wedge between the Hybrid and her brother. He reminds her that none of the other Hybrids are lucky enough to have their family. What makes her special? They eventually agree to keep him on site if Wendy commits to helping with the Xenomorph research.

Toodles and Kirsh look over the specimens when Toodles asks to be renamed. He wants to go by Isaac, and Kirsh agrees. Slightly runs into Toodles/Isaac on his way into the lab, which stops him from stealing the Xenomorph egg. Kirsh logs onto a computer to listen in on Slightly, revealing that he can hear the conversations between Slightly and Morrow.

Slightly calls Morrow to stop the blackmail. However, Morrow is at Slightly’s old home, threatening his real mother. Morrow threatens Slightly’s family unless he helps get the specimen to him. Instead of sneaking him an egg, he will need to get someone on the island near a facehugger and have it infect them. Morrow will then take the sample back into a human host.

Wendy, Smee, Toodles/Isaac, and Curly play games by a pond. They trick Hermit into tasting one of their “candies,” which is really just coding to help them experience a sensation. They can also use code to “read” books instantly and learn new skills. Curly then asks about “the Five,” the group of companies that rule Earth. Prodigy, Weyland-Yutani, Threshold, Dynamic, and Lynch rose up in a post-government world to take control. Slightly joins them, trying to force the other Lost Boys to demand that their families join them at Neverland. Hermit agrees, but Curly and Isaac prefer their new lives. Wendy tells everyone bye so she can join Kavalier in the labs.

As Wendy communicates with the Xenomorph inside of her brother’s lung, Hermit looks over the scar in a mirror. Slightly watches Hermit through a window from outside the room. The baby Xenomorph punches out of the lung and glass case while Kirsh looks on from the shadows. It appears snakelike but eventually becomes docile when Wendy recreates the sounds she’s been hearing. It allows her to pet it.

Is Alien: Earth “Observation” worth watching?

Yes, and “Observation” gets the early benefit of being our most philosophical yet. From the jump, Noah Hawley and the team are pumping us full of legitimate questions about Kavalier, Prodigy, and the violence corporations can inflict on the masses. Frankly, it is a little wild that Disney allowed Alien: Earth to take a swing at megacorporations. Good on Hawley for keeping to what has always been an integral theme to the story of Alien as a franchise, even if it might rock the boat. Even the title, “Observation,” speaks to the power dynamics at play that favor the company.

Wendy, Hermit, and Slightly are blackmailed in the service of corporations. The siblings are forced to leverage their relationships (and in Hermit’s case, money) to abide by Prodigy’s rule. Slightly’s family has a knife to its throat for Weyland-Yutani to commit corporate sabotage. Meanwhile, Arthur and Sylvie are abandoning their principles to maintain their power. Even their unwillingness to acknowledge that they may have killed children to accomplish their goal is part of Hawley’s point. Money and access will make us sacrifice our morality for the right price.

Yet only the powerful benefit, like Atom (who seems pretty clearly to be the gangster enforcer or a synth) or Boy Kavalier. They continue to push the extremes, making the concept of “Observation” an all-encompassing theme of the episode. The Big Brother is Watching ideas course through the series already, and while everyone looks on in horror at the Ocellus monster that burrows its way into the brains of dead animals, the visual metaphor easily extends to the way Kavalier is using the Hybrids. In all fairness, that sheep looks downright frightening.

Finally, Nibs shows the raw power of the Hybrids when her anger causes a temper tantrum. Her psychosis and mental break are real, but in many ways, she’s simply acting like a child. It is our expectations of seeing a grown woman, or Hybrid, act like this that are throwing off the calculus. Of course, it also speaks to the larger truth: Kavalier wanted children because of their imagination, but depriving children of maturity invites a host of other problems. How this affects the characters in the episodes to come will inevitably be a huge part of the story.

Alien: Earth releases new episodes on FX on Tuesdays. They release on Hulu the next morning. “Observation” aired on August 26, 2025.
