Resident Evil reboot is all set to open in theaters on September 18. Ahead of its highly anticipated premiere, the Zach Cregger-directed horror-comedy is eyeing a $50 million opening at the box office. According to some independent tracking services, the initial ticket sales could begin at $40 million and increase up to $50 million. There’s a strong possibility of the movie even surpassing $60 million in its domestic debut.

The upcoming Resident Evil movie is the second remake in the installment and the eighth movie overall in the horror franchise. Sony spent a budget of $75 million to produce the upcoming movie starring Austin Abrams, Paul Walter Hauser, and Zach Cherry.

Interestingly, Zack Cregger’s 2025 movie Weapons opened to $43 million at the box office. The R-rated sleeper hit movie ended its theatrical run at around $270 million, which is a significant leap from its $38 million budget. As Cregger wears his directorial hat once again, he is now aiming for an even bigger opening for Resident Evil.

In the upcoming Resident Evil movie, Zach Cregger is reuniting with Austin Abrams, who starred in the director’s last movie, Weapons. In Resident Evil, he stars as a medical courier. When a viral outbreak of infested monsters takes over Raccoon City, he must fight back. Resident Evil had its world premiere on September 15 at the United Theater on Broadway in Los Angeles.

Critics raved about the movie after the premiere. Variety called it “different, and much better, than the other ‘Resident Evil’ movies.” The movie debuted at 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. FandomWire’s very own Cole Groth described Resident Evil as “disgusting, chaotic, and relentlessly entertaining: the bloody shot in the arm this franchise has needed for decades.“

With already great reviews from critics, the movie is expected to do better at the box office than the previous instalments. At the same time, Resident Evil is this weekend’s biggest release, so it will smoothly secure the No. 1 spot on domestic box office charts.

Resident Evil arrives in theaters across the U.S. and globally on September 18. Are you excited to watch the movie in theaters?
