Marvel Studios’ X-Men reboot is reportedly adding Asa Germann to its new mutants lineup, though he almost ended up playing someone else entirely. The 28-year-old is in final negotiations for a key role in the upcoming superhero film.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Germann is set to play Warren Worthington III, better known as Angel. The actor was previously considered for the role of Cyclops, which ultimately went to Kit Connor.
The large, feathery-winged character first appeared in the first X-Men comic book in 1963. Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Angel can fly using his wings. He later received metallic wings capable of firing projectiles after sustaining severe injuries from the antagonist Apocalypse.
Ben Foster initially brought the flying mutant to life in the 2006 X-Men: The Last Stand, followed by Ben Hardy in X-Men: Apocalypse in 2016.
Why Marvel chose Asa Germann for Angel after missing out on Cyclops
Before Angel talks, Asa Germann originally auditioned for the role of Cyclops. The studio went with Kit Connor for the iconic mutant leader role following summer screen tests. However, Germann’s audition performance reportedly impressed the creator studio. That impression was enough for Marvel to offer him the role of Angel instead.
Moreover, Germann brings some exciting superhero credentials to the role. He has played Sam Riordan on Gen V, a powerful, near-invulnerable young hero with super strength. The actor also reprised his exact role in The Boys in a guest appearance.
If the deal closes, Germann will join the already stacked cast in the new X-Men reboot. The film stars Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, Maya Boyd as Storm, Christopher Abbott as Charles Xavier, and Adam Driver as villainous Nathaniel Milbury.
Jake Schreier, who directed Thunderbolts, is helming the new X-Men film, which is currently scheduled for release on May 5, 2028.
