House of the Dragon star Gayle Rankin isn’t happy about the omission of one of George R.R. Martin’s fan-favorite characters from Fire & Blood, and we understand why. Mushroom, a dwarf who served as a fool at the courts of House Targaryen, has been missing in the HBO series since Season 1.
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter discussing Alys Rivers, Rankin mentioned how she loves the things Mushroom says about her character, such as bathing in maidens’ blood to remain youthful and just how powerful and mysterious she is. In the same conversation, she said:
Where the f—k is Mushroom? Can that be the title of the article? Alys Rivers Wants to Know: “Where the F—k is Mushroom?”
Indeed, where on earth is Mushroom? The series deliberately left the court jester out of the storyline, and so far, there have been no reports of his possible inclusion in the show.

If there’s one character from Fire & Blood who could have made House of the Dragon even more unpredictable, it’s Mushroom. The infamous court fool offers one of the book’s most entertaining perspectives on the Targaryen civil war.
Unlike the maesters and nobles who record the events, Mushroom fills his stories with gossip, scandal, s*x, and outrageous accusations. The catch? He’s hardly a reliable source. His version of events often clashes with other accounts, leaving readers to wonder whether he witnessed the truth or simply enjoyed telling a good story.
So, where is he in House of the Dragon? Despite his importance in Fire & Blood, Mushroom has been notably absent from the show. At first, his absence might seem like a missed opportunity. He could have brought some much-needed comic relief to a story packed with betrayal, bloodshed, and family drama. Still, leaving him out may have been the right creative choice.
House of the Dragon already has a huge cast and plenty of complicated relationships to follow. Adding Mushroom could have created another subplot without doing much to advance the central story. More importantly, his role works especially well in Fire & Blood because he is part of the book’s unreliable historical framework. On television, his gossip and outrageous claims might have become distracting.
Mushroom is undeniably fun, but his absence shows that adaptation isn’t always about including every memorable character. Sometimes, knowing who to leave behind is what keeps a story focused.
Gayle Rankin on Alys Rivers’ Future In HOTD Season 4
Rankin has offered intriguing hints about what could be next for Alys Rivers in House of the Dragon Season 4. While speaking with AV Club, the actress shared her insights on what the future holds for her character now that viewers have learned more about Alys’ past:
I mean, I don’t see her going anywhere, but I wish I knew. I’m excited for whatever it is. I’m so grateful to Ryan [Condal, the showrunner] and to HBO and to the show. What a cool, amazing opportunity I did know when I signed up. I knew what I was doing when nobody else knew, so I was excited about that, too.
As for her portrayal of Alys Rivers, Rankin said that she wishes to keep fans guessing. While the character has expressed her desire to claim Harrenhal, the actress hopes Alys will ultimately find a way to be free.
With her motives and supernatural abilities still shrouded in mystery, fans can expect to learn more about the mysterious Harrenhal resident, whose next move could be one of Season 4’s biggest surprises.
