Haikyu!! fans got a huge surprise recently as the franchise dropped news about a brand new special anime called HAIKYU!! The Place Where Monsters Go. This project was announced back in March 2025, alongside the Haikyu!! VS The Little Giant movie (via Twitter/X). According to the latest information, the special anime is set to be released in 2027. Additionally, the official staff has unveiled a trailer.
Basically, Production I.G. decided one Hinata-focused movie wasn’t enough hype for one event, so they gave us a second project too. Here’s everything we know so far about when it’s dropping, what the trailer showed us, and which match it’s actually covering.
When Is Haikyu!! The Place Where Monsters Go Releasing?

Unfortunately, we only have a rough idea of when this project is coming out. Only the year has been confirmed, and that is 2027 (as per the official website), the same year the VS The Little Giant movie is set to release as well. This kind of vague timeline is pretty normal for anime announcements this early, though.
Studios usually confirm the year first and save the exact date for closer to release, and that is largely because television broadcasting schedules have to be confirmed as well. So for now, all fans can do is mark 2027 on their calendars and wait for more specific news to trickle in over the next few months.
Everything We Know From the New Trailer
TOHO Animation’s official YouTube channel dropped a new trailer for this project on August 19, 2026. It is no longer than 30 seconds, but it packs a punch. The biggest highlight that we can see is Kotaro, one of the strongest players in the entire anime, doing his signature smashes one after another. We also see the Mujinazaka High team making many smashes, which makes it look like the entire game is going to be very intense.
Kotaro’s entire “HEY HEY HEY” vibe is still there, and it looks like the animation isn’t holding back on making his spikes feel insanely powerful either. The end of this trailer also confirmed the 2027 window for the release – we can hope that it will be released around the time the movie will be released as well.
Furthermore, Hinata actually makes a brief appearance in the trailer as well. So even though this is not technically his story, he is not completely missing from the anime either. It’s a small but nice touch in case you were worried about that. There is also a key visual on the official site for this special anime, in which we can see both Kotaro and Wakatsu in their smashing pose.
The Protagonist Is Not Hinata: What Game Will It Show?

This special covers the Fukurodani Academy vs Mujinazaka High match, which happens during the Spring Interhigh tournament’s quarterfinal round. It’s based on Chapter 336 of the manga, and the match wraps up just one chapter later. Hence, this project is expected to be a short, single-episode special rather than a full season.
The main showdown is between Kotaro, Fukurodani’s star ace, and Wakatsu Kiryu, Mujinazaka’s captain. As for how it connects to the movie, both projects are actually set during the same tournament. While VS The Little Giant follows Karasuno’s quarterfinal match against Kamomedai, The Place Where Monsters Go covers a different quarterfinal happening at the same time frame. So, according to the chronological order of Haikyuu!!, it can be watched right before the upcoming movie.
