Now, in a new interview with Bloomberg, Studio Ghibli’s executives have offered the clearest indication yet that My Neighbor Totoro 2 is not on the studio’s creative roadmap. The important distinction, however, is that this is not an announcement that a sequel was canceled. Rather, Ghibli’s current leadership and business partners have explained why turning its films into recurring franchises is not the company’s preferred approach.
Studio Ghibli Finally Reveals the Fate of a Totoro Sequel
The latest answer comes not from a new Miyazaki announcement, but from Bloomberg’s 2026 examination of Studio Ghibli’s future. According to the interview with Bloomberg Businessweek, Studio Ghibli executives indicated that “sequelization” is not a path the company intends to embrace. Bloomberg also reported that the studio is not considering My Neighbor Totoro 2 or anything similar.
That philosophy is also reflected in the comments from Toho CEO Hiroyasu Matsuoka. Discussing Ghibli’s future, Matsuoka said that they are discussing several projects, but nothing has been set in stone. He said:
We of course await and welcome if Ghibli is producing any new project, but we cannot ask them, we cannot control, we basically await. We are discussing many projects on a very casual level, and sometimes it becomes realized very quickly — sometimes, well, ‘That’s a great idea, maybe we want to talk about it next time,’ and it never happens.
In other words, even the studio’s major theatrical partner is not treating Ghibli like a conventional franchise factory. That makes the 38-year-old question considerably easier to answer. When My Neighbor Totoro premiered in Japan on April 16, 1988, there was no franchise blueprint waiting behind it. Miyazaki created a self-contained story centered on two sisters, their sick mother, their move to the countryside, and the mysterious spirits they encounter there. The strongest recent official Totoro development is not a sequel announcement but a renewed look at Miyazaki’s original creative material. Studio Ghibli published Hayao Miyazaki Image Board Collection 3: My Neighbor Totoro in March 2025, collecting 219 pieces of imagery from the film’s development, including previously unseen material.
Studio Ghibli also continues to treat the 1988 movie as a living part of its identity. Its official works archive confirms the film’s April 16, 1988 release, 86-minute runtime and Miyazaki’s roles as writer and director. Meanwhile, the acclaimed stage adaptation has continued its West End run through August 2026, demonstrating that the story can be revisited without requiring Miyazaki to make another animated feature.
That may be the real answer after 38 years. Fans have spent decades imagining what Satsuki and Mei might discover next, but Miyazaki appears to regard My Neighbor Totoro less as an unfinished franchise than as a complete moment. And perhaps that is why it remains so powerful. The original film was never built around defeating a villain or solving a grand mystery. It captured childhood itself: fleeting, strange and impossible to recreate once it has passed.
For now, there is no officially confirmed new My Neighbor Totoro feature sequel. If fans are waiting to see Satsuki, Mei, and Totoro return to cinemas together, the 38-year wait continues.
