Jake Schreier is being eyed to direct Marvel Studios’ forthcoming X-Men movie.

Marvel is currently working on a new X-Men movie that is being written by Michael Lesslie. The film does not have a release date at this time, but it is expected to arrive after Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

Per Deadline, Schreier is now in “early talks” to helm the X-Men movie for Marvel Studios.

What do we know about the possible Jake Schreier X-Men movie?

The choice makes sense, as Schreier recently directed Thunderbolts* for Marvel Studios. That movie has received positive reviews from fans and critics alike, while it has also grossed $172.9 million at the global box office so far.

“It is unknown where things stand in the dealmaking process, but insiders say that, following a meeting this past week, Schreier looks to be the top choice to take on one of the studio’s most anticipated projects,” Deadline’s article notes.

Before Thunderbolts*,  Schreier made 2012’s Robot & Frank and 2015’s Paper Towns. He has also worked on television shows such as Lodge 49, Dave, Brand New Cherry Flavor, Minx, Beef, and Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.

“Even before the reactions began to come out about how impressive Thunderbolts* was, studios already were trying to get in business with the director. But sources say in recent days he has begun turning down jobs, as all signs were pointing to him landing one of the coveted directing openings in town,” Deadline’s article, which also mentions that Schreier is a big fan of the X-Men comics, further reads.

Plot details for the X-Men movie remain under wraps at this time. While it’s likely that the film will feature a brand-new cast, there has been no confirmation regarding whether any of the actors who previously starred in X-Men films — many of whom are returning for Avengers: Doomsday, such as Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen — will be in the MCU film.

Thunderbolts*, meanwhile, is currently playing in United States theaters.
