An Oscar-winner has joined the production of The Batman 2.
DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures’ The Batman 2, also known as The Batman Part II, is scheduled to arrive in 2027. Directed by Matt Reeves, the sequel to 2023’s The Batman will once again see Robert Pattinson reprise his role as Batman/Bruce Wayne.
Who has joined the production of The Batman 2?
Per Jeff Sneider’s The InSneider, cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt has been tapped to serve as the director of photography on The Batman 2.
The cinematographer for The Batman was done by Greig Fraser. Fraser won the Best Cinematography Academy Award for shooting Denis Villeneuve’s Dune in 2021, while he was also nominated for the same award for his work on 2016’s Lion and 2024’s Dune: Part Two. Fraser is now working with Phil Lord and Christopher Miller on Project Hail Mary, while he’s also attached to Sam Mendes’ Beatles movies.
Messerschmidt, meanwhile, won the Best Cinematography Academy Award for his work on 2020’s Mank, which was directed by David Fincher. He also worked on 2022’s Devotion, 2023’s The Killer, and 2023’s Ferarri, while he’s now collaborating with Ridley Scott on 2026’s The Dog Stars and reuniting with Fincher for The Adventures of Cliff Booth. Additionally, Messerschmidt has worked on TV shows such as Mindhunter, Legion, Fargo, Raised by Wolves, and Dope Thief.
Plot details for The Batman 2 remain under wraps at this time. Reeves co-wrote the script with Mattson Tomlin, while Dylan Clark serves as a producer. Following a handful of delays, production on the Batman sequel movie is now expected to begin next year.
The Batman Part II is scheduled to be released in United States theaters on October 1, 2027. Both The Batman and The Penguin spin-off show are currently available to watch on HBO Max.
