Supacell Review – A Groundbreaking Afrocentric Superhero Drama
Netflix’s Supacell, created by Rapman, is a refreshing entry into the superhero genre, standing out with its Afrocentric storytelling and compelling portrayal of everyday heroes. Set in South London, the series combines gripping drama, social commentary, and electrifying powers to create a show that feels both relatable and extraordinary.
Plot and Characters
At its core, Supacell revolves around five ordinary Black individuals who suddenly acquire superpowers, each grappling with the changes and responsibilities these powers bring. The leader, Michael (portrayed by Tosin Cole), serves as the emotional anchor, a man torn between his newfound role as a protector and his desire to maintain a normal life with his partner.
The ensemble cast brings depth and authenticity to the series, each character representing a facet of modern Black identity. Their struggles with systemic oppression, personal traumas, and societal expectations are seamlessly interwoven into the narrative, giving the show a layer of complexity rarely seen in superhero media.
Visuals and Direction
Rapman’s direction ensures Supacell retains a gritty, urban aesthetic that grounds its fantastical elements. The cinematography captures the vibrancy of South London while juxtaposing it with the darker undercurrents of crime and inequality. The special effects are sparingly used but impactful, emphasizing the humanity of the characters over their powers.
Themes and Social Commentary
What sets Supacell apart is its unflinching exploration of themes like racial discrimination, community, and the nature of power. The show challenges traditional superhero tropes, presenting powers not as gifts but as burdens that demand careful navigation. This approach resonates deeply, particularly in a world increasingly grappling with issues of equity and representation.
Pacing and Narrative
The series’ pacing is deliberate, allowing for character development and thematic exploration. However, some viewers may find the slower moments a bit too drawn out, especially when compared to the high-octane action typical of the genre. That said, the payoff in the latter episodes is worth the buildup, delivering emotional and narrative satisfaction.
Conclusion
Supacell is more than just a superhero series; it’s a cultural milestone that redefines what stories about power and heroism can be. While it’s not without its flaws, its ambition and heart make it a must-watch for fans of the genre and those seeking fresh, diverse perspectives.

Who isn’t here for a Black “Marvel” in 2024?! Major props to Rapman for writing, directing and producing this amazing work of art! This is more than just drama as Netflix labels it, it’s a top-notch Sci-Fi, Action, Thriller and major social commentary! The main cast is giving all-star performances! Shout out to Eric Kofi Abrefa!! Abrefa’s been killing it lately playing UK-based and US-based roles, dare I say it’s “KRAZY!” I can’t wait to binge the next season!! The only hard part for me was

Absolutely LOVED binge-watching this along with my mother! I *rarely* ever sit down to watch anything at all *ever*, But the cover art immediately caught my attention and the characters and story had me COMPLETELY HOOKED, in a way that i really never expected to feel about a series, specially when it comes to a non-animated one! ( I’m admitely a sucker for non reality based fiction and entertainment *only*, But MY GOD if this series didn’t completely blew my mind off the charts) Please give thi

I’m normally not into shows with characters with “superpowers” but I tried and liked The Boys on Prime (and Westworld on Max) so I thought I would give Supacell a try. It’s good! Not giving anything away, it’s a very creative and interesting take on the “supes” story (with slight Jordan Peele vibes 🙂) and well-written. The story unfolds at a good pace, isn’t predictable, and each episode builds on and gets better than the last (I went from giving it an initial 1 thumb up to 2 thumbs up after

2 1/2 stars. I’m on episode 3, it’s a decent watch for a series about people with super powers. Another show about someone doing everything under the sun to save “their” loved one from dying no matter the cost to others while not being truthful about it to the “loved one” nor the people whom he needs help from…eyerolling. Some of the actors/actresses were a little over the top to the point of dramatic/unrealistic/boring, the most annoying was the fact that these “adults” didn’t know or choos

Absolutely brilliant show. It’s content like this that makes me keep my Netflix subscription. The series offers compelling, original content that stands out in a crowded market. My only hope is that it gets a second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth season because it really is that good. As long as the writing remains consistent, it could truly redefine the superhero genre much like “The Boys” did. The show boasts a diverse cast with real depth, avoiding the clichés and stereotypes that plague

Supacell: A Fresh Take on the Superhero Genre Supacell is a breath of fresh air in the often over-saturated superhero landscape. Set in South London, the series follows a group of ordinary people who suddenly develop extraordinary abilities. The show excels in character development, delving deep into the complexities of its protagonists. Their

Adding to the glut of superhero content, we have a dramatic mix of Heroes meets Misfits that is just as entertaining as both. Characters are well written, complicated and fully realised. The south London setting keeps the supernatural elements grounded and gives plenty of opportunity to add natural tension to balance out the conspiracy elements. My only gripe would be some of the typical plot clichés – conflict arising through characters just not talking; fight scenes where people wait their t

I hardly ever review movies or tv shows but was terribly disappointed with this show. My teenager (17, almost 18) finally agreed to spend some time with me this summer and we both picked out a Netflix series to watch. He picked Supacell since it had a high Rotten Tomato score. The first 5 minutes had us both intrigued and excited. After the first 5 mins, there were many stereotypical scenes (young black men as gang members, drug dealers, clubbing, gang violence, etc…) My son asked if Lo

So happy to see an all black cast with superpowers and epic sci fi characters! As a white man saying this it is so refreshing as there is a very limited black superheroes shows or movies. More representation means more black kids can see themselves on screen other than white superheroes! Yes this show is r rated but it sets a precedent for much more to come! This series was able to show how real life would be if you ever woke up one day and out of the blue had these unbelievable powers!

Supacell is what happens when casuals hop on the superhero genre. The premise of the show is that Michael has to save Dionne from dying by recruiting 4 black people and one biracial. The premise pretty much becomes useless when she dies anyways and Michael rewinding time twice fixes nothing. Why would he need 4 specific people to save Dionne if he knew when Dionne would die so he could have sent her out of London for a few days or teleported her home before the final battle. I will be totally honest here. As a black woman from London hearing about the hype of this show, I was excited the more I heard it popping up in the media. But I became sceptical when I read negative reviews about the show and some viewers being disappointed. Kept me on the edge of my seat the entire way through. Nice to have an original super hero story. Something new and exciting. A few things don’t make sense, like a delivery driver affording what he does, but other than that this is solid gold. Something I really liked to see was rather than fitting representation into a remade super hero story, was original heroes created and given the justice of amazing writing that they deserved. Smart and well written characters in an intriguing storyline. More compelling than your usual superpower plot, this one has a subtext and no shortage of real world context. For all the predictably racist white people on here, you need to remember there are literally NO black people in the many thousands of movies that have been made.
