Mortal Kombat II has once again switched release dates.
Mortal Kombat II is the forthcoming sequel to 2021’s Mortal Kombat movie. Based on the popular video game series, the new film is directed by Simon McQuoid and stars Karl Urban as Johnny Cager, Josh Lawson as Kano, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, and more.
When is the new release date for Mortal Kombat II?
Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line originally planned to release Mortal Kombat II in theaters on October 24, 2025. In August, however, it was announced that the movie was being pushed back to May 15, 2026.
Deadline’s reasoning for the release date switch reads, “Why is a highly anticipated sequel moving to next year after notching record views for a red-band trailer (107M global views)? Precisely that: the Simon McQuoid-directed sequel is bound to deliver tons more in mid-May than staying in the crowded late October frame where 20th Century Studios’ Jeremy Allen White Bruce Springsteen movie, Springsteen Deliver Me From Nowhere, and the next Colleen Hoover feature take, Paramount’s Regretting You, exists.”
Now, the sequel has been bumped up by a week, meaning Mortal Kombat II will arrive on May 8, 2026. The move makes sense and allows the movie to have some more breathing room before Lucasfilm’s The Mandalorian and Grogu arrives on May 22.
The only other movie with a May 8, 2026, release date at this time is a mystery comedy movie titled The Sheep Detectives, which is directed by Kyle Balda and stars Hugh Jackman, Emma Thompson, Nicholas Braun, Nicholas Galitzine, and more.
The cast of Mortal Kombat II further includes Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Damon Herriman as Quan Chi, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han/Noob Saibot, Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi/Scorpion, and more.
