Samurai Punk, the indie developer behind well-received titles like KILLBUG, is the latest victim of 2023’s consistent targeting of video game studios. Although the year only has a couple of months to go before it officially ends, it seems to be ensuring that it takes as many game developers with it as possible since many other studios have also recently gone through similar situations.
Samurai Punk, however, has definitely had a pretty good run that went for a whole decade, which is something not everyone gets the luxury of having.
Ten years after the studio came into being, Samurai Punk has officially shared the “unfortunate news” with its fans and community.
Samurai Punk Bids Farewell to Its Players in a Heartfelt Note
Samurai Punk, the studio behind the positively received KILLBUG, officially announces its departure.
Samurai Punk took to its official X account to share the extremely sad news with its players, which was accompanied by a heartfelt note that bid a final farewell to the studio’s fans. The developer announced that it was “ceasing development” effectively, which comes as quite a shock because its latest title, the first-person movement shooter KILLBUG, was released earlier this year to very positive reviews.
However, it seems that the success of its beloved fast-paced video game was just not enough to keep Samurai Punk afloat.

The directors of Samurai Punk, Winston Tang and Nick McDonnell, penned and attached a note for the studio’s community to explain what led them to this decision, with a special shoutout to the developer’s team members. Calling their impressive 10-year-run “wild” and “amazing,” Tang and McDonnell stated that it was definitely not easy to come to this “tough decision” as their “journey together” has finally reached its “end.”
The pair then proceeded to acknowledge and “thank” the Samurai Punk team, both “past and present,” admitting that none of it would “have been possible without them.”
During its extensive decade-long existence, Samurai Punk has managed to create “9 incredible games,” which is undeniably applaudable considering the overall size of the formerly Melbourne-based developer. The directors continued by saying that they can’t overstate just “how talented everyone who came through” and joined their team is, wishing their former employees the very “best with their own journeys in the industry.”
Both Tang and McDonnell are fully aware that due to Samurai Punk shutting down, its team members will obviously “be looking for new roles,” asking their audience to contact them or “the individuals directly” in case of any available openings.
The Samurai Punk directors also responsibly claimed that they are willing to provide their former team members’ “CVs and contact details” if anyone can provide them with job opportunities.
The Origin Story of Video Game Developer Samurai Punk
Samurai Punk was founded all the way back in 2014 in Australia.
The directors of Samurai Punk then decided to take their readers down the studio’s memory lane, stating that it:
started in 2014 during a situation in Australia where jobs were short and the only route forward for us was to either found a company or move overseas to find work. We banded together with the shared goal of creating exciting and fresh game experiences, and we’re incredibly proud of what we were able to achieve together.
According to the Samurai Punk directors, there has been professional growth for the whole team as developers, and they “learnt a lot about what we want as artists making video games.” But unfortunately, all of that comes at the cost of the “conclusion that it’s the right time for” the team to “part ways and embark on new adventures.” Fortunately, the bad news comes with just a hint of a good one for Samurai Punk fans.
These Are All of the New Weapons in Modern Warfare 3
The directors decided to leave the fans with a little bit of hope after sharing such drastic news so fans could continue having fun experiences with their “existing” games. They assured the player community that the studio is entering “a support mode” so that all of its current projects are always available to play. Samurai Punk may be dying, but the developer’s video games will live on.
Tang and McDonnell ended the farewell by expressing their “deep gratitude” to fans for “being part of” the studio’s 10-year journey and their “continued kind words and support.”
Thank you for everything.
Much Love
Rest easy, Samurai Punk.
