Now we are again back to the classic Frieren storytelling. The slow slice-of-life atmosphere with soothing soundtracks and just vibes, that’s all today’s episode was about. But you know what? Before I get into all that, I must mention two highlight moments from the episode for me.
The first one has to be the very first scene. Like, we got the GOAT, Denken, in the flesh in this episode. That alone is worth hyping for. After all, since the First-Class Mage Exam arc, I’ve loved Denken’s character exceptionally a lot. So seeing him back in action pumped my blood up.
Then, the other one came around midway in the episode. It’s basically when Frieren recalls a particular demon when she heard the words “Golden Land”! Now, don’t get me wrong, I have still avoided spoilers. But I’ve heard that he’s going to be the best villain in the next arc.
The Northern Pleateu Is Progressively Getting Scarier by Each Episode

The deeper we’re traveling into the Northern Plateau, the scarier it’s becoming. The scale of the hazards is unfathomable. Not only are demons a threat here, but even dragons are also unleashed in the wild, destroying human villages here and there.
Thus, when the trio arrives at one such destroyed village, the village chief asks Frieren to slay the dragons that did this. Well, Frieren would of course not do that for free. Why? There are two reasons. One is that helping them for free would make them indebted to her, which Himmel didn’t want. And two, of course, Frieren loves to collect weird spells.
Anyways, it hasn’t even been a single episode, and Stark is already going big in his fights. He took down almost all of the dragons on his own, while it seemed like Frieren and Fern only slayed two! I swear, Stark is overqualified and underpaid, as it seems to me at this point.
I Can’t Imagine Stark Keeping a Journal Following Himmel’s Footsteps
Now, the 2nd part of the episode was the real highlight for me! It was so good that it almost brought my emotions to the max. There was this scene where the episode shows us events of the past from Himmel’s perspective, and that genuinely affected me in the best way.
In fact, the whole quest searching for Himmel’s journal was pretty refreshing. The time they had to wait at the port for the winter season to pass, then their eventual travel to the island where Himmel’s memoir was, all mashed up into another solid installment.
And when Frieren finally gets to read Himmel’s rather ordinary journal, the face she was making was really precious. Like, yeah, I could feel you, Frieren. Even I would’ve broken into tears if I were in her shoes. To be able to read the memories of your past loved one sounds so sad.
But how could Stark write a journal? He’s too straightforward and always so outgoing that I can’t imagine him squeezing time out to keep one. I mean, I know it will never happen, but just the idea that he came up with was quite funny, too. I don’t know about you guys, though.
Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Season 2 Episode 9: Final Verdict

Animation and OST-wise, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Season 2 Episode 9 has properly met my expectations, which are generally quite high for every episode. But now that only 1 more episode is left, I wonder where the story will end in Season 2. Regardless, this episode should easily be rated quite high, in my opinion.
