Zoe Kazan on Why East of Eden Feels Personal
Adapting John Steinbeck’s sweeping family saga for the screen, Zoe Kazan has spoken openly about the emotional connection she feels to the material.

“In the process of bringing this family saga to life, the resonance of my own familial connection to the material has not been lost on me,” Kazan told Netflix. She continued,
But it is Steinbeck’s writing — personal, shocking, profound, and free — that has kept me enthralled by East of Eden since I first read the book as a young teen.
The project carries added significance as Kazan is adapting the novel decades after her grandfather, Elia Kazan, directed the 1955 movie East of Eden. Kazan has described working on the series as “the greatest joy,” praising both the experience itself and the cast and crew behind the limited series.
East of Eden is expected to be released in early 2026.
