Universal Pictures may be getting ready to bring The Mummy franchise back, with a new The Mummy 4 rumor involving Brendan Fraser popping up.
What is The Mummy 4’s latest update?
According to a new report from insider Daniel Richtman, Universal is developing a new sequel to The Mummy franchise with Brendan Fraser. The report doesn’t mention much else at this point, so it’s unclear whether any other star from the original series will also be making a return.
The Mummy franchise began in 1999, with a film directed by Stephen Sommers. That movie served as a remake of sorts to Universal’s original 1932 film, and starred Fraser, Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, Arnold Vosloo, Jonathan Hyde, and Kevin J. O’Connor. The film spawned off an entire franchise, with two direct sequels, including a prequel film, The Scorpion King, which also helped spawn off the acting career of Dwayne Johnson.
The last film in The Mummy franchise came in 2008, with The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. That film also saw Fraser return. In 2017, however, Universal tried to start another Universal Monsters franchise and attempted to reboot The Mummy series, in a film with Tom Cruise. That film ended up doing poorly, though, and lost a reported $60-95 million, subsequently ending the planned rebooted universe.
