A DCU star has teased a “very unique” story as filming gets underway. The People v. Gorilla Grodd is taking a surprising true-crime approach to the superhero world.
Skyler Gisondo returns as Jimmy Olsen after playing the character in Superman. The eight-episode comedy comes from American Vandal creators Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault.
Speaking with Collider’s Steve Weintraub while promoting Lance Oppenheim’s new HBO series Primetime, Gisondo talked about the early stages of production of the DCU series.
He said, “This show, especially, is so fun because I’ve never seen anything like it — the idea of a mockumentary set in a superhero world. Tony [Yacenda] and Dan [Perrault] are such masters. I was such an enormous fan of American Vandal, and so to be working with these guys whose work I love, I think this show is going to be a very unique angle on all of this stuff, and very unexpected in some way, and we’re having a blast.”
The actor also compared his DCU show to documentary filmmaker Lance Oppenheim’s approach, stating, “Similarly to the way Lance [Oppenheim] works, because it’s this true-crime mockumentary thing”.

The 30-year-old actor also explained how the show’s documentary style sets it apart, “It’s a lot of verité stuff. It always feels very alive. We’re filming courthouse sequences where it’s just the CCTV cams, so it feels like a play. We’re just running through. So it’s been really fun. We’re only a little ways into it, so hopefully it turns out alright.”
The People v. Gorilla Grodd follows Jimmy as he reopens a famous Metropolis murder case where Grodd was convicted of killing his father, the King of Gorilla City. The story unfolds as an in-universe Daily Planet true-crime documentary as Jimmy investigates whether Grodd was wrongly convicted of the murder.
Jimmy Tatro plays Gorilla Grodd, while Beck Bennett, Mikaela Hoover and Wendell Pierce reprise their Superman roles. Mary Holland, Eduardo Franco, Arian Moayed, Andrew Leeds and Tim Baltz also star.
HBO chief Casey Bloys has confirmed that the series is now in production. A release date has not been announced yet.
