The singer explained how both his parents were Muslims, yet his father’s open-minded perspective on faith played a crucial role in his musical journey.

Adekunle Gold Reflects on His Musical Roots
Adekunle Gold spoke about his fascination with a teen choir in church, noting that he was particularly inspired by the boys leading the congregation in praise and worship every Sunday. He mentioned that rather than feeling discouraged by not being selected for leadership, he was motivated to improve his skills during rehearsals.
Gold also highlighted the influence of his aunt, who taught him and his siblings how to sing different harmonies at home. She was a choir member and contributed significantly to his musical development.
Despite never attaining the choir leadership role he aspired to, Adekunle Gold regarded those 11 years in the church choir as foundational to his music career. He composed his first song at around age 15 and later performed with various church-related groups before gaining national recognition with his highlife cover “Sade” in 2014.
Reflecting on a recent orchestral performance of that song, he mentioned how he couldn’t have imagined that he would still be pursuing music and realizing his dreams seven years later. He encouraged listeners facing challenges, reminding them that “dark seasons do not last forever.”
