The Percy Jackson & the Olympians star has teased a major change from the books for the upcoming season 3 of the Disney+ show. As Walter Scobell, who plays the titular demigod in the series, recently revealed, the latest season of the show will bring noticeable changes from Rick Riordan‘s original book series.
One of these changes is bringing Percy and Nico closer in the series than in the source material. Besides that, it introduces Nico (played by Levi Chrisopulos) and his older sister Bianca (played by Olive Abercrombie) and shows the two holding each other as their top priority. Scobell also shared that this season is “not from Percy’s point of view.”
As Chrisopulos noted, he worked with acting coach Andrew McIlory to keep “the solid points of Nico’s personality from the book,” but also adjusted “a few things to match with the other character changes in the show from Percy and Thalia and Bianca.”
How Season 3 expands Percy and Nico beyond the books
Talking to Entertainment Weekly recently ahead of the Percy Jackson season 3 premiere, Scobell revealed how this season changes Percy and Nico’s relationship, giving the fan-favorite demigods a closer bond than readers read in the books.
“They’re a little bit closer than they are in the books,” Scobell said. “Nico reminds Percy a lot more of himself and how happy you could be in this [magical world]. I think it’s really easy to start to lose your optimism [when] you start to feel really negative feelings, and I feel like Nico is so positive, and he’s so happy, and everything is so interesting and cool to him, and I feel Percy likes seeing that a lot.”
Plus, Nico’s protective streak about his sister, Bianca, is also something that Percy “really respects about Nico, because that’s something he’s always had too,” as Scobell explained. So fans might as well expect to see a closer bond between Nico and Percy than the one described in Riordan’s books.
Percy Jackson & the Olympians Season 3 premieres on November 20 on Disney+.
