The crisis began when a radiotherapy machine containing radioactive caesium-137 was left behind in an abandoned clinic. Two scrap collectors later found the machine, dismantled it, and unknowingly exposed themselves to dangerous radiation.
After breaking open the capsule, they discovered a glowing blue powder. Thinking it was harmless, they shared it with others. The material quickly spread through homes, as people touched it and even let children play with it. Soon, many began to fall ill with symptoms like vomiting and burns, but the cause was not immediately known.
The disaster was finally detected when contaminated material was taken to a hospital, where experts identified it as radioactive. Authorities screened over 100,000 people, with around 250 found to be contaminated (History). At least four people died, and many others required treatment.
A massive cleanup followed, with homes demolished and areas decontaminated to stop the spread. The Netflix series presents a dramatized version of these real events, highlighting both the human impact and the scale of the crisis.
